The Rolling Stones in Exile

Biography

The Rolling Stones were formed in London in April 1962 by Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica, guitar), and Keith Richards (guitar, vocals). Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early line-up. R&B and blues cover songs dominated the Rolling Stones' early material, but their repertoire has always included rock and roll.

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

For this 1966 album, one Stone asserted himself even more than Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who for the first time wrote all the album's songs. Brian Jones is all over the opening "Paint It Black", which remains a dark classic more for its spooky sitar than for Jagger's dated psychedelia. Jones's marimba boosts the R&B-derived "Under My Thumb" and his harpsichord somehow makes the subject of "Lady Jane" more interesting. Though Charlie Watts's jazz-derived fills and Bill Wyman's bass continue growing into rock's greatest rhythm section, a disturbing misogyny creeps into Jagger's class-conscious lyrics, especially on "Under My Thumb", and "Stupid Girl". --Steve Knopper

3.0 out of 5 stars Inferior to UK original, docked for not making it available, 11 Mar 2001

This review is from: Aftermath (Audio CD)
Hear about the Beatles' famous butcher cover? That photo was a protest against how some British groups' albums were being mangled Stateside. As a US fan, I've enjoyed the superior (and longer) UK versions of early Beatles albums made available in my country when their catalog was being issued on CD. Too bad the same hasn't been done with the Stones; worse, UK fans are being forced to endure the US reshuffles (splitting _Out of Our Heads_ into two separate albums, for example) and redundancies (_Flowers_, where "Out of Time" wound up, plus recycled tracks from _Aftermath_ and US _Buttons_)...

5.0 out of 5 stars a classic album fatally weakened by its reissued format, 18 Dec 2000

can't help but agree with the previous reviewer - though there are actually THREE tracks missing on this reissue, Out Of Time, Mothers Little Helper and Take It Or Leave It. Maybe if enough fans express their disappointment the powers-that-be will reissue the original - and then I can happily buy the CD version. Until then I'll just have to stick with my original 1966 vinyl version.

4.0 out of 5 stars disappointing..., 14 Oct 2000

The original UK issue was the ultimate Stones' album, thanks to Brian's genius. But this reissue lacks the great Out Of Time and my second favourite Stones song Mother's Little Helper the inclusion of which made this my number one choice. The album's still excellent, just not as perfect as when it was first issued.
