Spine-chilling and gripping,

This review is from: Afterlife - Series 1 [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
I somehow missed this when it was on TV, but I bought the DVDs on a whim and I'm very glad I did. I found the show truly gripping and couldn't wait for the next episode as each ended, probably because every episode is different to the others.. What a refreshingly original TV show amongst a lot of rubbish which is around at the moment.I'd recommend it to anyone who likes psychological ghost stories- Afterlife is genuinely scary at times, particularly episode 3 about the boy who is believed to be schizophrenic but is actually being haunted by a ghost. Lesley Sharp is amazing in Afterlife- truly believable and a very different role from other things I've seen her in- The Full Monty, Bob and Rose and so on. Her best performance. My only qualm with the show is if you're a psychology student, like me, you might find it slightly irritating that the show portrays psychologists as being slightly insensitive, clinical, closed-minded individuals who apparently talk about Freud all the time. Still, that didn't stop me loving the programme. I was slightly disappointed with the last episode because I expected everything to be wrapped up, for it to be quite final, but it did feel like a bit of an anti-climax. However, this suggested to me that they intend to make another series. I hope they do, as there is much potential for the characters to be explored further.

Haunting, disturbing class drama,
This review is from: Afterlife - Series 1 [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
This is a fantastic drama from ITV starring the monumental talent of Lesley Sharp in the role of psychic Alison Mundy, a woman haunted by her past and the spirits that never leave her. Great script, camera work and music and sterling support from Andrew Lincoln and a terrific supporting cast. Would recommend!!

I saw this on TV as it was originally transmitted last year and was spellbound. I had only ever seen Lesley Sharp in 'Full Monty' but she is truly stupendous in this; if ever an actor made a part, then Lesley Sharp makes this - even with all the plaudits in the world, you could not adequately picture this - it really does have to be seen to be believed. Personally, I did not rate Andrew Lincoln's performance but whether that was because he was eclipsed by Lesley Sharp we will never know - I think pretty well anyone could have played his character and been equally overshadowed. The series itself is TV drama at it's best and was a welcome change from the usual Saturday night dross. Series 2 is here, I believe, and has it's work cut out to be a worthy sequel. This first series really is a hard act to follow. Outstanding. ***
