Product Description

CD Description

There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that siblings Míchaeál Ó Domhnaill and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, rhythm genius Dónal Lunny, piping king Paddy Keenan, flute virtuoso Matt Molloy, and brilliant fiddler Kevin Burke stood at the very summit of the Celtic music - a group admired by all, imitated by many, surpassed by none. It was inevitable that the group would record a live album (in that bastion of Celtic music, Paris, France!) producing a wild, uninhibited set of music, “played with verve, and captured with truly great sonics.” Tracks: The Kesh Jig; Give Us A Drink Of Water; Famous Ballymote / The Butterfly / Casadh An Tsúgáin / Farewell To Erin / The Heathery Hills Of Yarrow / The Death Of Queen Jane / The Pipe On The Hob;The Hag At The Churn / The Priest; Mary Willie’s; Ths Is My Love, Do You Like Her? / How Can I Live At The Top Of A Mountain? / Rosie Finn’s Favourite; Over The Water To Charlie; The Kid On The Mountain / The Green Groves Of Erin; The Flowers Of Red Hill

By Huck Flynn TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The bothy band remains the yardstick against which all "modern irish" trad music is measured and this album, recorded live in Paris in 1978, has not dated by one second - compare with the current masters Altan, Lunasa, Dervish and Danu. Marvellous tunes played with flair and abandon, gorgeous songs superbly sung, all imaginatively arranged. Listen to pipes (Keenan), fiddle (Burke) and flute (Molloy) mesh together in Kid on the Mountain, Farewell to Erin or The Priest - each instrument taking turns in the limelight then dissolving into the Bothy wall of sound. Donal Lunny's bouzouki is inspired, driving the band on irresistably and the O'Domhnaill siblings give marvellous renditions of Casadhan Tsugain, The Death of Queen Jane and How Can I Live, Triona's keyboards (revolutionary in their day) are particularly effective, especially on Green Groves of Erin. perfection from first bar to last fading moments and dying applause. Like a good guinness, it just leaves you thirsty for more.

Fine performances, pretty good recording 21 May 1998
By P. Lozar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This was the Bothy Band's final album, recorded on a tour of Europe shortly before the band imploded and its members went on to other things. While many of the tracks will be familiar to those who have heard their other albums, the performances are excellent and there are some nice surprises ("The Death of Queen Jane" is a stunner). The quality is generally good for a live recording -- which is to say, not up to studio level, but still eminently listenable. A worthy addition to anyone's Irish music library.
