Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

After Glow is, essentially, a collection of Crowded House's "orphan songs"--the outtakes, the demos, and, yes, the barrel-scrapings--that seeks to shed some light on the history of one of the most successful bands of the 1990s. It's easy to see why Crowded House were so popular; anthemic, but understated, Neil Finn's New Zealand acoustic minstrels marked the triumph of sentimentality over cynicism--REM without the absurdity, U2 without the pomposity. After Glow, though, sheds uncomfortable light on their work methods--the sleeve notes refer to some compositions as "producer-inspired compounds", which it basically transpires is two mediocre songs pasted together by some studio wizard to make--surprise!--one slightly less mediocre, but largely meaningless, song (see the acoustic ramble of "Sacred Cow"). Elsewhere, we're deep in B-side land--"My Telly's Gone Bung" being a song about drummer Paul Hester's television breaking down. With Crowded House's consistent, prodigious back catalogue, don't be upset if After Glow is nudged off the bottom of your must-have list. -- Louis Pattison

This is a great record, showcasing early Crowdies songs through to some of the last material recorded. Some tracks have featured as B-sides in some form, others are unreleased officially but have featured in live shows over the years. 95% is top-class, comprising the usual lovely melodies and slightly off-beat lyrics. Paul Hester's "My Telly's Gone Bung" is thrown in too and well illustrates the drummer's sense of humour, if not his songwriting prowess. And an added bonus is the stripped-back mix of "Private Universe" - a lot of the layers from the 'Together Alone' album version are removed, revealing the beautiful acoustic guitar work beneath.

If you're a first time buyer, get Together Alone first, then Woodface, Temple Of Low Men and finally the debut Crowded House. Or get the Best Of if you must. Then get Afterglow.

"Afterglow" is an album of rare Crowded House tracks and was released after the band broke up. Overall the album showcases the talents of a truly unique and original band merely by the fact that the tracks they deemed were unworthy of being included on their albums are really as good as anything they had ever released. The majority of the album features tracks that were recorded during the "Woodface" sessions, so their greatness does not come as a surprise as "Woodface" was one of the bands best albums. The album is quite brilliant, with it's overall sound being typical of the laid back rock tracks that has characterised the rest of their albums, however although this slow rock is the base for the album's sound, the album does get more innovative and creative and you see the band taking a lot more risks, than they did on any of their official releases. The highlights of the album include "You Can Touch", "Anyone Can Tell", "Recurring Dream", "I Am In Love" and "Private Universe", which are tracks that would've been a welcome addition to any Crowded House album. Overall it's a great album and is a must for any fan of the band or any fan of good rock music

This is a great ablum to finish off anyone's Crowded House collection. This is a 2 CD set, the second CD is a Neil Finn interview, where he goes through the reasons for including the songs on CD1.

As Neil says, most of the songs would have been released on albums before, but they always seemed to have too many songs for inclusion, so inevitably some had to be dropped. Don't think of these songs as inferior, because they aren't.
