After You is a compelling and haunting story about Ellie, she learns her best friend Lucy has been murdered leaving behind her husband and young daughter. Ellie drops everything to travel to London, for the funeral and to do what she can to help. She leaves her husband Phillip behind in Boston.
She arrives to find Sophie, Lucy's child has witnessed the murder and has stopped speaking. Lucy's husband is not coping and has had to let the childminder and other staff go as they were releasing personal information to the press. Ellie decides to stay until the situation can be resolved. In order to help Ellie she starts reading the book, The Secret Garden with her. As the book starts to weave its spell round both of them, Ellie is uncovering secrets that Lucy kept from her. She is also forced to confront problems in her own life, the loss of her baby and the distance that has grown between her and her husband. Events begin to spin out of control and all their lives will be changed forever.
This is a haunting book. The parts where Ellie is reading The Secret Garden to Sophie for the first time cast you back to the first time you read the book in your childhood and the wonder you felt when the garden was found. As Ellie uncovers the secrets Lucy has kept hidden you are compelled to keep reading, wondering what the final outcome will be. You are walking with the characters, experiencing their emotions and understanding the difficulties they face. I wasn't sure if I would like the book at first but within the first few pages I was hooked.

This is one of those books you pick up intending to read only a few pages and then suddenly find you can't put down. If you like authors like Elizabeth Berg and Elin Hilderbrand, I highly recommend this book about friendship, marriage and the healing power of books.
Ellie and Lucy have been best friends since childhood. When Lucy is attacked and murdered while walking her daughter to school, Ellie drops everything - her job, her husband - and flies to the UK. Lucy's 8 year old daughter Sophie, who witnessed the murder, is refusing to speak and Lucy's husband Greg is falling apart. Ellie realises that she is needed, so she stays on - prompting a crisis in her own, already rocky, marriage. As the bond between her and Sophie grows, Ellie finds it increasingly difficult to think about going home.
I truly loved the first half of this book. It drew me in immediately and I could barely put it down. The second half was still okay, but less compelling. It felt like the author had got stuck and struggled to keep the momentum going. There was a not very interesting sub-plot with Ellie's parents that felt like it had been put in to pad the book out (although it does play a part in the conclusion). The male characters are also very sketchy. However the central storyline and female characters kept me interested. Ellie was such an interesting and flawed heroine (in fact I got really annoyed with her and the way she abandoned her husband, refused to say when she was coming back and then played the victim when he felt that was unreasonable of her). The friendship between Ellie and Lucy was also pleasingly complex.
I did felt let down by the ending. I wanted to know what happened next! The characters had become so real to me that I found myself wondering how they are doing now (silly, I know).

I really enjoyed this book so much I devoured it in 2 days! If you like Marian Keyes, Dorothy Koomson and others like them then I think you will like this. The story is quite tragic and I really felt as though I connected with each of the characters. The ending was a little predictable which is why only 4 stars, but all in all I will definatley purchase more books by this author. Her style is very easy to read but not so much that you "skip read" as I somtimes do with other authors.
