Book Description

RAVAGED BY WAR ...AD 71. After the battle at Whorl, Brennus of Garrigill is irrevocably changed. Returning to Marske, Ineda finds her grandmother dead, though Brennus is not. Snared by a Roman patrol, they are marched to Witton where he is forced to labour for the Roman IX Legion. Embracing his new identity as Bran, Brennus vows to avert Roman occupation of northernmost Brigantia. Ineda becomes his doughty spying accomplice, though sometimes she's too impetuous. Trading with the Romans lends excellent opportunities for information gathering. Over time, Bran's feelings for Ineda mar with his loyalty to Ineda's father. When she disappears, and cannot be found, Bran enters direct service with Venutius, King of the Brigantes.

What others say of her writing:
TOPAZ EYES "This is a stunning read, which absorbed my attention from the beginning."Jane Bwye
#1 THE BELTANE CHOICE " is one of the most convincing evocations of Celtic Britain that I have ever come across, and the central romance stands out against that background with great passion and immediacy." Simon Stirling, The Review Group.

#2 AFTER WHORL: BRAN REBORN "As in The Beltane Choice, the author brings the culture and society of Celtic Britain vividly to life - and in this book there is also an intriguing contrast with the ordered, militaristic lifestyle of the occupying Romans. An engaging tale, with fascinating insights into Celtic/Roman Britain." Tim Taylor

#3 AFTER WHORL: DONNING DOUBLE CLOAKS "...this is a powerful tale of ordinary people responding to extraordinary circumstances." Dr. Mark Patton

5.0 out of 5 stars The trauma of Roman occupation within Britannia. 5 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In this novel, the second of a trilogy set in Britannia 71 AD, Nancy Jardine brings the heartbreaking post-battle trauma experienced by Brennus (hero) to the forefront of his very existence. Although as a well-trained native warrior, when faced with the might of well-trained Roman soldiers, the Brigante's defeat at the Battle of Whorl reveals the weakness of individualistic heroics against that of disciplined Roman team-led assaults and defence tactics. Left for dead, to his chagrin, Brennus' survival is reliant upon the expertise of an aged healing woman (Meaghan), who not only tends to his physical injuries she affords wise counsel. But in the long process of his recovery and the sad loss of his healer, he sheds his old identity as Brennus of Garrigill and instead is reborn as Bran of Witton.

With Witton as his adoptive home, and he too becoming an adoptive son, Bran is as good as sworn to protect his adoptive sister (Meaghan's granddaughter) from harm, which is easier said than done. Ineda proves a force to be reckoned with, and causes Bran (Brennus) more than mere headaches, for he becomes enslaved as a day-worker to Roman supremacy and she remains free to roam within set boundaries. Nonetheless, both are committed to ridding the land of the Roman invaders, occupiers-cum-slave takers, and when opportunities arise for garnering valued knowledge of the enemy and troop movements, Bran and Ineda are as one but find themselves at odds in ways that are to prove fatal for both. And so the saga continues, for suddenly and brutally separated, their roles are reversed, in that Bran is free to roam and Ineda is enslaved. Although each knows where the other's heart lies, can they ever be as one again?

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! 10 Mar. 2014

This wonderful author did it again, captivating me in this wonderful and magical adventure from the first word, right to the very end.
This book is about Brennus, the Brother of Lorgan, who everyone thought was dead, but survived terrible injuries, thanks to an old healer called Meaghan, that not only heals him but shows him how to adapt to his disabilities and fight on.
The old Brennus has now been reborn, as Bran is no longer a warrior and half the man he used to be.
In this book you experience his journey to find himself again with the help of Ineda Meaghan's Grand Daughter. And wow what a journey of true courage, bravery, honour and love!
This book has everything you could possibly wish for to grip you in its power, right to the very end.
I was so sad that I had finished the book so quickly. I look forward to reading the 3rd book.

Well done Nancy, you have a true gift.

After Whorl - Bran Reborn picks up beutifully from The Beltane Choice, filling in the story of the fate of Brennus, brother of Lorcan of Garrigil after the battle of Whorl with the Romans. Having suffered life-changing injury and defeat, Brennus is cared for by Meaghan, but they remain isolated and in hiding from the Romans. Unable to return to his role as a great warrior, Brennus struggles to come to terms with his disabilites and chooses to leave his identity and old life behind him, and goes in search of a new life and a new purpose in the battle against the advancing Roman army.

The book has a great balance of action and emotional struggle; romance and adversity; tragedy and humour. It develops both the characters from the first book and the advancement of the Roman Army, keeping the pace of excitement all the way through. Highly recommended along with the Beltane Choice. I am eagerly awaiting the third book in this trilogy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The story continues...and matures 2 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
After Whorl: Bran Reborn, continues the momentous events started in The Beltane Choice with the Roman invasion of Britain as the native inhabitants struggle to preserve their way of life.
The Brigantes are a proud race and many prefer death to subjugation by the Roman invaders. The story starts with one of their brave warriors near fatally wounded, nursed back to health by a healer. Ashamed of his ruined body and with his strength is gone, in his new life Bran accepts the label of being simple as a fitting punishment. However, he soon discovers that being underestimated can have its uses when he spies on the Romans. As Bran recovers some feeling of self-worth his companion, Ineda has grown from a girl into a woman and a long denied mutual attraction flares into a physical relationship. But this is not a book of happy endings and when Ineda is captured, a Roman commander becomes infatuated with her, and she must become his bed slave - leaving Bran oblivious to her fate...
After reading The Beltane Choice (highly recommended) I was excited to read After Whorl. Once again Ms Jardine impresses with her attention to detail and the ability to immerse the reader in a different era. I felt the author had matured immensely since #1 and indeed, After Whorl has a different 'feel' to #1 - both books are excellent but are different types of read. The Beltane Choice is heavy on the romance, whilst After Whorl is more a work historical fiction with romantic elements. This threw me initially but once I'd settled to understanding the author had 'grown up' I was every bit as entertained and can highly recommend this absorbing read.
