Product Description

From Amazon.com

Jimmie Dale Gilmore's tremulous, twangy whine is a beautiful thing, full of loneliness and humble awe. On After Awhile he uses it to fine advantage, on definitive versions of his standards, "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" and "Treat Me Like a Saturday Night," as well as on a driving cover of Butch Hancock's "My Mind's Got a Mind of Its Own," which includes hot mandolin from Richard Bowden. After awhile, though, the stripped-down arrangements and melodies here can start to sound alike. Thankfully, the bluesy "Midnight Train," with snarling electric guitar from James Pennebaker, heats things back up and then some. --David Cantwell

5.0 out of 5 stars West Texas treat..., 20 Mar 2009
By
The Country Grumpkin "Jimmy" (England) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: After a While (Audio CD)
This was Jimmie Dale Gilmore's third solo album, released in 1991, just a few months after the Flatlanders had finally made it to CD with their ironically titled More A Legend Than A Band. Jimmie D was, of course, one of the mainstays of the Flatlanders with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock.

After Awhile has no musical saw to evoke that West Texas wind, as on Legend: for that we make do with Jimmie's distinctive, high lonesome tenor on a strong collection of songs. The album kicks off well with a fine version of his own, extremely catchy Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown (which appears on Legend) with a nice acoustic feel, whilst Treat Me Like A Saturday Night features some great pedal steel from James Pennebaker. Butch Hancock's uptempo My Mind's Got A Mind OF Its Own moves things along, and I loved Don't Be A Stranger To Your Heart, with producer Steve Bruton's twangy boss guitar riffs interplaying with more great pedal steel. Another standout track is the bluesy Midnight Train, where a wailing harmonica and Steve's slide guitar combine to great effect, and Go To Sleep Alone has a Cajun feel. The last track, Story Of You, is a real beauty, with lovely piano, and James Pennebaker's fiddle rounding things off. The rest of the album is pretty good too.

Apart from Butch Hancock's song, all the others were written by Jimmie, with just 2 of them being co-writes. The musicianship throughout is first-rate, complementing Jimmie's laid-back singing style and matching the album's general tone and mood.

According to the notes in the accompanying booklet, Jimmie D says he grew up in a state of musical conflict, struggling to reconcile his early love of country music with his liking for pop and rock 'n' roll. He's always read widely, and in time found a line in a book by Ezra Pound that seemed to resolve the confusion for him: 'the poem fails when it strays too far from the song, and the song fails when it strays too far from the dance.'

Well, there ya go, Jimmie.

Lovely CD, by a lovely man with whom I had the pleasure of travelling for a week in September 2010 on a Roots on the Rails - Narrow Gauge trip around New Mexico and Colorado.

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice between Roy Orbison and Hank, 15 Dec 2004
By R. J. Marsella - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: After a While (Audio CD)
Several years ago my brother sent me this cd and at first I must admit I didn't get it. Gilmore's voice threw me but every once in a while I picked it up again and gradually (as Jimmie sings- sometimes we're a little slow in catchin on) the beauty of these songs just sank in and Gilmore's voice began to sound perfectly suited to them to my ears. Now years later I listen to this now and then and consider it one of my favorite country records. My brother passed on a few years ago and everytime I listen to Jimmie Dale Gilmore I think of him and thank him for introducing me to this great music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my most cherished albumns, 21 Jun 2002
By Virgil "Virgil" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: After a While (Audio CD)
It's a crime that Jimmie Dale Gilmore isn't as well known as a country singer. This albumn is one of the best crafted and beautiful country albumns of the last twenty years as far as I'm concerned. From "Tonight I think I'm gonna go downtown" to the "Story of You" there isn't a clunker among them.

Gilmore voice is hauntingly beautiful and his songwriting is second to none. Perhaps no Texas singer/songwriter except Townes Van Zandt can match Gilmore's talents. This is great country music and great music period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Great, 27 Jun 2002
By S. Finefrock - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: After a While (Audio CD)
This one would get 5 stars just for the track "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown". A deceptively simple song that will haunt you once you've heard it. The rest of the recording does not dissapoint after this stellar lead track. Gilmore's unique voice and spare songwriting style make for a satisfying listen. Anyone who has an interest in Alt.Country or any other musical style that drifts outside the commercial margins would be well advised to check out anything by Jimmie Dale Gilmore.
