Product Description

Review

Unusually small typeface doesn't detract from this companion to War Boy (1990) and War Game (1994), about the return to relative innocence that marked the immediate post-WW II years. In shining prose, Foreman limns the wonders of peace time: his first visit to a beach, the end of rationing, the Big Band sounds coming over the radio. The illustrations, watercolors punctuated by black-and-white drawings and full-color reproductions of advertisements and posters, convey the poignancy of the times: In the stooped posture of two Estonian schoolboys is all the fear an outsider ever felt. Evocative and memorable. (Kirkus Reviews) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Life for a young boy is different after the Second World War ends - the country is moving forward again and he is finding his place in the world. Once the victory parades are over and the barbed wire and unexploded bombs are cleared his attention is drawn to football, music, girls and art. Michael Foreman's personal story is the story of life in Britain in the '40s and '50s - from soldiers returning from war to jazz clubs and 'teddy boys' -- a time when everything changes. Like 'War Boy', 'After the War Was Over' is a lively and innovative combination of story and factual information with Foreman's trademark beautiful illustrations.

Endless Discussions 15 May 2007
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my six year old son, it is perfect for dipping into and inspires endless discussions about what life was like when his grandparents were growing up. Full of mini stories about the end of the war, refugees, football, advertising and art I have found he returns to it again and again. Perfect for children who are ready to progress from picture books to chapter books in terms of content but who like the reassurance of plenty to look at in a book as well as words. A great introduction to history too.
