The Virtue of Wim 13 July 2011
By Wirklich Verrukt - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Enthusiasts of Wim Mertens' music will probably recognize two parallel but contrary impulses in his work. One is what I think of as post-Beethoven, in which motivic development rules. These pieces often start out with a couple of seemingly stray notes and fool around to see what can be made of them, and can be challenging to hear as music. The other is post-Debussy: lush, often Romantic scores in which instead of a theme, a sequence of notes to be developed, there is is a sound to be explored. It may be a key or a combination of instruments, but these pieces develop that instead of a melody, generating a mood. A friend of mine gets angry and accuses Mertens of not knowing where he's going, but if my friend wants to hear something lush and Romantic he wants it to be Bryan Ferry. In other words, he needs set-ups and resolutions within a minuet-and-trio structure. I say Wim Mertens doesn't go anywhere because he's already there. Those who like to join him there don't need me to tell them, except perhaps to say this album is in the Debussy mode, with Mertens on solo piano. This is just before Motives for Writing and Der Heisse Brei, and he does sing on one cut. But it's not New Age, shallow maundering. Things happen in Mertens' music, and some of the best things happen in After Virtue.

INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL 12 May 1999
By Joe A. Stokes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'm sorry the critic above heard a different album than the one I've listened to a hundred times. This album never grows thin. Never boring, Wim Mertens is a musical genius virtually unknown in the U.S. he's not distributed here.AFTER VIRTUE is a favorite among Merten's enthusiast.Besides solo piano and voice Mertens also creates magnificent music for ensemble. TRY JARDIN CLOS or the latest 3cd set INTEGER VALOR INTEGRALE.Many with ears to hear believe him to be one of the greatest living composers. Give him a listen.

The very best of Wim Mertens 18 May 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I've been following Mertens' carreer for the last 10 years and After Virtue stays my favorite cd. This almost hermetical music is to me a deep reflexion on sound and silence. A perfect summer night put into music. It's my favorite birthday present, try it you will be amased.
