I was really really disappointed with MR's Mia's Scandal (currently free to download on Kindle, which pretty much says it all) and had almost decided that I wouldn't be reading another MR book, but I got this from the library and am really pleased that I took a chance on an old fave of an author.
This tale is basically an updated version of the Charlotte Lamb classic The Long Surrender, and whilst it doesn't quite match the original, it comes pretty close: Angie and Roque married in a hurry, didn't communicate too well and she was too preoccupied with keeping her wayward younger brother, Alex, in line to see what damage it was doing to her brand new marriage...After yet another row, she stormed off to yet again sort out her feckless brother, turned back home half way there, only to find Roque in a compromising position with another woman, and assumed the worst. So, Angie ran away, Roque hunted for her like crazy, planning his revenge, until Alex of all people turns out to be the one to bring Angie back into Roque's life...tit-for-tat as in the CL novel.
It's a year later and Alex is in trouble and Roque is the only one able to help him out and his price is that Angie agrees to come back to him. That's basically it. Shortish and sweet, it could have earned a full 5* review if the estrangement and denouement had gone on for a bit longer, as barely married a year and barely separated a year, the leads are back to where they were and all seemed a little too pat, but I suppose with M&B that's what you often get. The CL version took place over a slightly longer period of time and had some added touches that made it more poignant, more emotional and more passionate, but I did enjoy this one, and yes, I will read more by this re-discovered and in-favour-again author.
