A Terrific end to a Groundbreaking Series 30 Mar. 2000
By Maudeen Wachsmith - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Dorothy Garlock's series set in the 30s and 40s has been truly groundbreaking -- not many romance novels being set in these decades.
AFTER THE PARADE continues the story of Johnny Henry and Kathleen Dolan from WITH HEART. And tells the story of them and their marriage after Johnny returns from World War II. Their marriage is in jeopardy after the death of their infant daughter -- a death Johnny blames on himself and his heritage. There is also something more dangerous about as an admirer of Kathleen's crosses the line from admiration to obsession.
Dorothy Garlock deftly tells their story as only someone of her talent can. Here's hoping more authors follow her lead and write stories set in the 30s and 40s. AFTER THE PARADE is a must read.

Great ending to the war series 21 Mar. 2001
By J. Williams - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase
Once again Dorothy Garlock gives us a great book. Johnny Henry and Kathleen must overcome their own misgivings and issues surrounding their backgrounds and the death of their baby. A strange character that is fixated on Kathleen only adds to drama.
The characters in this book are very real. There were several times that I wished I could snap some common sense into Johnny Henry and get these two together.
This was a great ending to the war series. For anyone who has read "With Hope", "With Song" and especially "With Love" this is a must read.

Dorothy saved the best of the series for last. 15 May 2000
By Janet Kagan - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Garlock manages to pull out a historical period not usually covered by romance authors - and gives us a truly wonderful story. I enjoyed the book that preceded "After the Parade" but LOVED this final work the best. Her characters have substance - with both strengths and weaknesses, faults and goodness. Garlock is to be commended for her ability to cover the era so acurately. Kathleen and Johnny's story is one that will all can identify with - a tragic event, depression, denial and the difficult path to rebuilding. The characters that surround the couple and support them are as rich, and interesting as Kathleen and Johnny. Dorothy, what a wonderful tribute to your husband, by dedicating this one to his memory.

Ms. Garlock couldn't get enough of this couple either!!! 18 Nov. 2001
By Jody L. Schoth - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I don't think Ms. Garlock could get enough of Johnny and Kathleen Henry either, as she created another masterpiece centered around this couple! I read this book in 2 days, and found it to be just as good or maybe better than the previous book, "With Heart." I don't know what I'll do without reading about the people in this family... It was really easy to grow to love these fictional characters, and I long for more!! I hope Ms. Garlock continues with some of the other characters in this book. READ THIS BOOK... YOU'LL BE IN LOVE WITH JOHNNY AND KATHLEEN HENRY, TOO!!!
A Wonderful Closing to a Tremendous Series: 9 Nov. 2013
By JJares - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This book is 5th and last of the Dolan Brothers series. I generally pass on stories taking place during the years between the two World Wars; I just cannot muster much interest. However, this series as a whole - and this book -- are absolutely wonderful.

AFTER THE PARADE is a continuation of Johnny and Katherine Henry's story (WITH HEART). During the span of time between these two books, Johnny and Katherine have had a baby girl. She was born with no hope of living and Johnny blamed himself (he was `Mud Creek trash').

Katherine was devastated by Johnny's coldness and his insistence that she get a divorce while he went to war. The story opens as Johnny is returning to Oklahoma - as a hero. He learns rather quickly that Katherine has not gotten the divorce.

It is perfectly obvious that these 2 people are still in love but both are too proud to apologize to the other. Things continue to go downhill until Katherine finally finds herself at the lawyer's office.

This book is a `tour de force' because many of the characters in the previous 4 installments either reappear or are mentioned in this story. The author did a lovely job of updating readers of the changes the families experienced.

I can't find anything to complain about this book - other than I wish there were another one coming. Beautifully written with distinct characterizations are two things a reader can expect from this author. Ms. Garlock outdid herself; she's also captured a bygone era.
