Product Description

The course of true love never did run straight...

Evie Day has never wanted a boyfriend she's gay, out and proud, and as far as she's concerned, her life is perfect that way. But when her girlfriend leaves her for a leggy blonde, everything changes her flat, her friends, her future and she finds herself having feelings for an old friend, who just happens to be a man. To say that things aren t turning out the way she planned is an understatement.

With her best friend Jamie's Big Fat Gay Wedding looming on the horizon, Evie struggles to choose between her ex, her old friend, a new best friend in the form of a beautiful, chaotic burlesque artist, and a grumpy but distracting new flatmate.

All she wants to do is find The One, but for Evie, thinking straight never did come naturally.

Very Enjoyable 2 May 2012

This book was an unexpected gem. All the characters are well written and I really began to care about the main character Evie who has just split up with her girlfriend and starts on her journey to find 'The One'. A very enjoyable read.

Sophia Blackwell has written a heartbreaking, yet often funny, account of a young woman's oddysey through London life. The reader is taken to strip clubs in Soho, bars in Hackney and upmarket cafes in Muswell Hill in the pacey and exciting narrative. Full of sensual detail it is honest about sex and relationships but never voyeuristic. The memorable, often flamboyant characters are convincing and believable as we are shown their emotional vulnerabilities. Evie, the narrator, has such a strong engaging voice that I really did not want this story to end! The book will continue to give me pleasure though as it is beautifully designed throughout and the clean, modern lines of the cover are a work of art.

It is probably not a surprise that the author of this novel was previously a poet, given the quality and construction of the language. It is an evocative story about relationships, love and friends set in London.

The story is fast-paced and follows Evie Day through a break-up, an 'experimental' relationship and through to finding the 'one'. As ever the book concludes on a positive 'all is right with the world' note which is a shame given the honesty and humour of the plot. Although its sounds like traditional 'chick-lit' there is a complexity in a number of the characters that makes it stand out from other books in that genre. Particularly powerful are the two parental characters, who have that rare mix of comedy and believability.

I would say though that the real strength of this book is the use of language and the beautiful, descriptive and engaging tone.
