I disn't know what to expect from this first novel but from the moment I started it I was fully committed to it's central character. I fell a little in love with Evie day as she negotiated life as a single woman in her own indomitable way. Blackwell's characters came to life from the page fully formed, multi dimensional, imperfect and wholly believable. Witty, heartfelt and hopeful the novel is a must for anyone in the middle of a break up and truly shows there is life after heartbreak.

Sophia Blackwell has written a heartbreaking, yet often funny, account of a young woman's oddysey through London life. The reader is taken to strip clubs in Soho, bars in Hackney and upmarket cafes in Muswell Hill in the pacey and exciting narrative. Full of sensual detail it is honest about sex and relationships but never voyeuristic. The memorable, often flamboyant characters are convincing and believable as we are shown their emotional vulnerabilities. Evie, the narrator, has such a strong engaging voice that I really did not want this story to end! The book will continue to give me pleasure though as it is beautifully designed throughout and the clean, modern lines of the cover are a work of art.

This book was an unexpected gem. All the characters are well written and I really began to care about the main character Evie who has just split up with her girlfriend and starts on her journey to find 'The One'. A very enjoyable read.

It is probably not a surprise that the author of this novel was previously a poet, given the quality and construction of the language. It is an evocative story about relationships, love and friends set in London.

The story is fast-paced and follows Evie Day through a break-up, an 'experimental' relationship and through to finding the 'one'. As ever the book concludes on a positive 'all is right with the world' note which is a shame given the honesty and humour of the plot. Although its sounds like traditional 'chick-lit' there is a complexity in a number of the characters that makes it stand out from other books in that genre. Particularly powerful are the two parental characters, who have that rare mix of comedy and believability.

I would say though that the real strength of this book is the use of language and the beautiful, descriptive and engaging tone.

I was already hooked after the first few paragraphs of this emotional roller-coaster. Sophia Blackwell has crafted her central characters so convinvingly that I very quickly felt I had a vested interest in the course their lives were to take. Relationship classification, sexuality, mental health and equality are just a few of the 'topics' that help to make this book more than just a fanciful divertissement, giving you food for thought as well as a good laugh and a cry!
