Product Description

Product Description

When Alice's friend Serena goes away she stays in her house, with its sunken bathtub and big-screen TV. Best of all is the outdoor swimming pool. But one night a stranger walks out of the woods and jumps naked into the pool. Alice hopes he won't be coming to get her, like so many have done before.

Wow is all I can say 30 Aug 2001

Everybody starts off by saying this is the best Laymon they've ever read. Well, THIS IS! As with all of Richard's books I was gripped from the word GO and couldn't put it down. The story of Alice is just amazing and I actually found myself gasping "No" in disbelief at some of the twists in the book. This is just an absolute must have. Also, did anyone figure out the clue???!!!!

After having read practically all of Richard Laymon's books, I can safely include this in the best. It is typical Laymon and has everything you would expect from the great man himself.

Here you have a girl this time as the main character, getting up to all sorts of escapades we would dearly like our daughters to stay away from and meeting some really depraved characters that Laymon gives us to loathe and sometimes suprisingly, to love.

I find it hard to believe he was able to walk the streets amongst us with such a dispicable and devilish mind. If aliens were to come to earth after reading anoy of his books, it is vert likely they would be carrying various weapons and watching warily over their shoulders at mankind.

It was a long time ago now but 'After Midnight' was the first Laymon book I read. I think the most concise review I can give is simply that I went on to read all his other work. In brief, it is an account of one ordinary night that turns very bad for a girl called Alice, and a tale of how situations escalate beyond control.

Given the content of Laymon's work, I think it's inevitable that it will divide opinions - he dares to describe scenes and events that other writers would simply shy away from. Depending on your point of view, Laymon's books are either brilliantly original, or twisted journeys to a very dark place...or perhaps both....

But Laymon's greatest triumph lies in the way he uses the graphic narrative to capture the reader - he makes you aware the normal rules do not apply. Very bad things can, and will, happen to the main characters. No one is safe, and any ending is possible. Laymon books also force us to confront our attitudes to violence and uncomfortable issues. When reading his books, at some point you'll think 'this is disturbing stuff'. And then you'll realise you're enjoying it. Reflect on that for a while......
