Amazon.co.uk Review

Amid the pomp and foppery of Swinging London, The Walker Brothers always stood out. Lean, moody Californians with matinee jawlines and those strange, tortured ballads about cuckolded existentialism and how the sun was never gonna shine anymore, they clashed with both the grinning beat-groups on their way out, and the communal trip-out around the corner. "Love Her", "Another Tear Falls" and "Make It Easy On Yourself" are all closed eyes and clenched fists, photogenic torment backed with the lushest orchestration of its day. In between the hits are songs like "Mrs Murphy" and "Archangel", that hint that Scott Walker was not just a pretty face and a mile-wide voice, but a visionary melancholic set to dim the lights on the late 1960s with his string of incomparable solo albums. Free of the usual omissions and superfluous additions, After The Lights Go Out is the definitive Walkers compilation. --Taylor Parkes

The world has become a much friendlier place for American fans of the Walker Brothers in the last few years. It seemed that for ages it was quite impossible to find any of their recordings in any condition, especially in shops selling new music. Happily, a good deal of their British material is now available on the web and it has enabled me to hear most of their output in recent months. "After The Lights Go Out" is undoubtedly the album to have if for some reason you only want to own one. It is the best representation of their '60 material. Not only can you find their better known songs such as "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore (far superior to the Four Seasons version), "My Ship Is....", and "Make It Easy On Yourself" (better than Warwick's),included are lesser known songs,"Saddest Night In the World" and "A Young Man Cried". These two were B sides in America, which shows how little the folks at Smash Records knew about the talent they were squandering. For the sake of brevity take it from a real fan of the Walkers love songs..this album is well worth the price (whatever it is). It represents their best for American fans. Bill Brown-Dallas, Tx. USA

In the 60's, albums were treated as second-class citizens in the music industry; only hardcore fans would buy them and little time was spent on their recording. Covers and showtunes were raced through in a couple of takes at a time when even B-sides were a superior breed to the album track - even the first few Beatles albums followed such a pattern. For that reason, this is the best way to own the Walker Brothers 60's work. The chaff is removed entirely in favour of singles, superior tracks from anywhere else and, oddly, a couple of interviews at the end. Most of it wonderful, showcasing a group struggling with initial indifference, then struggling harder with their success and the fact that Scott was so obviously outgrowing his collegues. The songs stand up well and, whilst not in the league of "Scott 3" or "Tilt", fans of the best remembered Walker should have this too, even if just for his cloud-clearing vocal performances. In a word - useful.

Someday a proper walker Brothers comp will be issued to take in their Dalton Brothers singles and that first great one as the Walker Brothers-Do the Jerk.
The solo stuff made by Scott after the trio disbanded is of no interest to me yet its all over the other comps.Jackie and Amsterdam are particularly atrocious to ears accustomed to the Beatles and the pop music of the era and it wasn't till the 70s reformation that they were back on track.
Hard to believe really that Scott Engel began life on a Texas label called Orbit singing high school pop-which I found more interesting than all that Jacques Brel stuff.Scott was also doing demos one of which went to Tommy Sands.
As the Dalton Brothers they cut a single for Capitol and appeared on Shindig.
And depending on what you read Scott also played with the Routers in 1962.
As the Walker Brothers there were very important covers.Like The Sun ain't gonna shine any more-the first Frankie Valli solo single which amazingly was a flop! The Walker Brothers version outsold it in the States.
Make it easy on your self-better than Dionne Warwick? Well seeing as hers was a cover maybe Jerry Butler should be considered.
Many of their singles were covers of failed American songs like Bobby Coleman's You don't have to tell me-which for some reason acquired a bracketed title when the word "baby" was added.
My ship is coming in-a flop for Jimmy Radcliffe-doesn't on first hearing sound commercial.
Stay with me baby in its original version by Lorraine Ellison was pretty uncomfortable listening-unless you liked Deep Soul-which I don't.
Archangel-a B side-is quite stunning with a cathedral organ.
The Goffin-King song Honey & Wine would have been a big one for the Walker Brothers
But Scott is now into Outsider Music.Music I never heard nor even want to do
