With the exception of Rising Damp, this is ITV's only really GREAT comedy. So many have dated (Bless This House, On the Buses, Watching) but not this. As a teenager in the eighties it was the highlight of the week. Now I have all the episodes!
On this DVD there are 13 episodes. Like Fawlty Towers or Porridge there is not one bad programme. Star of the show is Joan Sanderson who combines all mannerisms from Hyancith Bucket (Bouquet) and Mrs Slocombe whilst keeping a regal quality throughout. A particular great moment is in the episode "Memory Games" where she lists the names of the kings and queens in rhyme and at great pace.
All filmed around the lovely village of Thames Ditton, this series is to comedy what Midsomer Murders is the crime. Comfortable, relaxing, non-threatening and good for the whole family to watch (do they still so that?). Sadly ITV is more concerned about reality shows and their extra bits and so it's unlikely you'll see this on ITV3 or ITV4.
My only complaint was that there are no subtitles. As this is an ideal birthday treat for Grandma or Granddad (though not exclusively) the DVD makers should have included this facility.
