Product Description

Sunday Times

Phil Campbell is poised for success. At the beginning of the year, we tipped him as one to keep your eyes on and his new album lives up to our hype. It is all set to cosy up against the works of David Gray, Damien Rice and Ray Lamontagne on the shelves of those who have fallen in love with the recent return to proper songs, sung properly, by
proper songwriters

5.0 out of 5 stars Music education, 15 April 2008
Phil Campbell is an original singer-song writer. Not just great tunes but authentically written and sung lyrics about real life. He has had a loyal fan base for years and now is the time to share him with a wider audience. This is mature music for all ages.

1.0 out of 5 stars Be careful if you own his last album - Joy, 1 May 2008
By A. McMahon (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I saw an ad for his new album, and having bought and really liked his previous album Joy, I decided to buy it. Luckily before I did I looked to see what the tracks were and realised just in time that this seems to be a repackage of his previous album with a couple of remixed tracks. I can understand re-issuing Joy after being on Jools Holland, but feel this is a bit misleading changing the album title too.

If you don't own Joy then I rate this as a four, worth it for Cold Engines and Maps alone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Fresh New Life, 14 May 2008
I was lucky enough to discover thanks to a 'Q' sampler track, singer songwriter Phil Campbell some time ago in 1997 and purchased his brilliant first album 'Fresh New Life' which is a 5 star masterpiece. After a long period out of the spotlight, very pleased to find this talented Scotsman back in excellent form. 'Maps' is a throw back in time with shades of Bob Dylan/Joe Egan/Gerry Rafferty, 'Should have Stayed Home' is trademark Phil, a brooding number that builds beautifully and is my personal favourite track. Others to consider are 'Sweet Sister' 'Cold Engines' and 'No Love Songs'. On the title track, his singing reminds me of David Gray and its classy instrument arrangement. The album is well worth considering, but note other reviewer's warning if you already have purchased the previous album 'Joy'.
Returning Footnote :- Having played this album over and over, this reviewer is returning to say that 5 stars is now awarded and my album of the year award seems to be heading in Phil Campbell's direction.
