A good Peter Sellers film,

This review is from: After The Fox [DVD] (DVD)
It has all the mad-cap Peter Sellers entertainment that you'd expect. Of course, it's far-fetched, but that's what it's supposed to be!
Sellers puts on a good performance, as usual, as a supposed master criminal, who escapes from jail in an entertaining way. This, of course, gives him the opportunity to commit a real crime, but also save his family, at the same time! If you like Peter Sellers, this is definitely a film for you. Don't expect it to be serious, but do look out for some good acting, some daft scenes and a completely mad script! I enjoy it each time I watch it.

A very amusing watch-once and forget about it film, I wouldn't say this was fantastic by any means but it's very entertaining all the same. Peter Sellers is a fugitive who poses as a film director in order to obtain a shipment of gold (while 'filming') by deceiving the welcoming village who are enthusiastic extras. Stereotyping Italians to no end (although Sellers has stereotyped every country in the world at some point and you know you love it!), he breezes through this film with his usual comic charm. Like the Party, it's completely pointless but will leave you laughing your head off.

From the director of The Bicycle Thief...,

Daft, annoying, raucous, frenetic, but for those interested in either Peter Sellers or Vittorio De Sica this is essential viewing. For anyone who has seen the vastly under-rated The Life and Death of Peter Sellers many scenes will be familiar, and one scene in particular was ripped off wholesale by Austin Powers. After The Fox is an imperfect but extraordinary work, especially for cinephiles. An exuberant Sellers relishes in the variety and absurdity of his many guises within guises, and De Sica - who was also an accomplished and hugely popular actor, here appearing as a "himself" - seems to have thrown all caution to the wind. He even pokes fun at the very Italian neo-realism of which he, along with Rossellini, was a principal architect. Purely as a film I would only have given it three stars, but it gets one extra for its unfettered nerve, lunacy, irreverence and genuine historical importance. After The Fox also has possibly the worst title song in the history of music and lyrics, but you don't how far you can go, until you've gone too far.
