Take your After Effects skills to a new level! Twelve step-by-step tutorials, designed by industry professionals, explore a variety of creative approaches as they teach useful design concepts and production techniques.

Updated for After Effects 6.5, this new edition covers the most significant Version 5 and 6 features including 3D space, cameras, lights, parenting, text, animation presets, paint, and expressions. Each carefully structured project presents the "why" behind the steps, so you can adapt these techniques to your own designs and motion graphics work. All contain timeless concepts that will be of use for many years to come.

After Effects in Production also contains six case studies of commercial projects created by award-winning studios such as ATTIK, Belief, Curious Pictures, The Diecks Group, Fido, and the authors' own studio, CyberMotion. These detail the integration of After Effects, 3D programs, live action, and a variety of animation techniques, revealing the artistic concepts behind the spots as well as the inventive techniques used to execute them. The enclosed DVD contains QuickTime movies of each of the final animations, allowing you to step through them frame-by-frame so you can examine them in detail.

Amazon Review

After Effects in Production is a follow-up to Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects also by Trish and Chris Meyer. The new book contains a dozen project-based in-depth tutorials and six case studies featuring commercial productions by companies such as Attik, Fido, Belief and the author's own studio, CyberMotion.

This is a book for those who have already clocked up a few hours in the After Effects cutting room. If you're starting a career in post-production, or are simply curious to discover how to get the most from new After Effects 5 features such as 3-D compositing, parenting and expressions you'll find it here. At the same time, half of the tutorials and all of the case studies are After Effects 4.1 compatible. All the project files, finished movies and some bonus materials are provided on a CD.

After Effects in Production isn't one of those books that contain a lot of white space, big pictures and interviews with industry gurus about the importance of motion design in a global cultural context. This is very much a hands-on manual, every spare column inch is packed with step-by-step project walk-throughs, screengrabs, margin tips, facts, problems to look out for and references to other sources of information.

The projects are substantial pieces of work, RoboTV, for example, which animates a robotic arm used as a pointing device for a sports programme trailer, includes 37 steps, 65 screengrabs and 4 panels detailing the use of particular After Effects features. This approach makes After Effects in Production one of the most highly concentrated sources of After Effects know-how currently available. --Ken McMahon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

"By showcasing a variety of artistic techniques, After Effects in Production is a natural follow-up to Creating Motion Graphics."
-- Steve Kilisky, Senior Product Manager, Adobe After Effects

I have bought all the books by Trish and Chris Meyer on Adobe After Effects. I'm sure there other good books out there but this series published by CMP are the most extensive on what is quite a complex, unintuitive but powerful application. This book in the series covers using After Effects in professional production environment and so it assumes that you are already confident with the program. If you are looking for beginner books then you should buy the first two - Volume One: the essentials and Volume Two: advanced techniques. These two are an expansion into two volumes of Trish and Chris Meyer's first book 'Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects' which only covered up to version 4.1. After Effects in Production takes you through several case studies from leading studios of how After Effects is used to tackle certain post production scenarios. One chapter explains the use of 'parenting' to animate a robotic arm while another focuses on minute details of realistically compositing a 3D model into a live scene. The book is better suited to those who own After Effects 5.0 and later as it goes into detail on cameras and lighting of the 3D features that were brought in with that version. Like all the books in the series the CD includes all the support files such as QuickTime, Illustrator drawings and Photoshop graphics to create the projects with, using an excellent visual step by step approach that offers useful tips along the way. Each CD that comes with each book in the series acts like an extension to the book containing additional tutorials or case studies, all in Acrobat format and with the relevant support files. There is also a wealth of web links, resources and other useful stuff. If you are a budding video effects artist and need a bit of extra guidance or inspiration - bring in the professionals to teach you by getting this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly copyable 13 Jan 2003
Format:Paperback
I love this book!
It is full of case studies that you can use for your own work and it is surprising how many of the ideas can be spotted on current T.V.. It is a good follow-up to Angie Taylor's book rather than an introduction. These people really know their stuff and it shows in the way they can put it down in an understandable fashion.
Like all good books, it pays for itself straight away and the best point is that you can dip into a section to learn a particular technique. If this doesn't help you be creative, then give up!

5.0 out of 5 stars AE: The Next Level 15 May 2006
Format:Paperback
If you have experienced bad experience(s) from After Effects Magic(because AE Magic is truly a pro level book with do this and do that culture, no room for folks below pro level as well)or any other AE book consists of projects/case studies then its time to forget the past and stick to this saviour.

I consider this book as an open class room. Although this book is based upon Creating Motion Graphics with AE Vol 1&2 and its name can make you feel a book for pros and perhaps a future addition to the collection. Then, you are missing it by deciding it as a far future shopping. Better go for it. It makes you learn things in real world. Best thing about the book is that a user with little know how of AE(without even following Creating Motion Graphics and Effects with AE Vol 1&2) can also use it because step by step tutorials, Tips, Tricks, Cross references and explanations don't let you lost in space. Ideas, concepts and case studies are like an open window towards pro creative word. It's the best thing money can buy among many book on AE. This book is "The Next Level".
