Composer James Newton Howard is always reliable - that's why he's one of the most well-known and prolific film composers working today. He has collaborated with director M. Night Shyamalan many times now, and his score is often one of the most memorable aspects of those films (his music certainly elevated "The Village" and "The Last Airbender"). Overall, I think "After Earth" is another successful soundtrack.

For a large portion of the movie, the young character Kitai is on his own - and there are many threats. The soundtrack reflects the many dangers he faces - much of the music has a suspenseful and menacing tone. Some of the action-heavy music is very interesting to listen to, and I'd imagine the music works even better within the film. After working on films like "The Bourne Legacy" and "Snow White and the Huntsman", James Newton Howard is quite experienced when it comes to scoring action movies like this.

There are some slower and more emotional tracks as well, but even those are quite suspenseful and the effect is that the whole album leaves the listener on edge. I know a lot of people prefer more pleasant melodies - and this soundtrack falls a bit short in that area.

The music sounds completely appropriate for the environment in which the film takes place. This may be Earth, but it's not the Earth you know. There's an element of discovery to it all; you never know what will be around the next corner.

Same old sounding modern score. Orchestra buried on top of electronics. Last couple of tracks show potential but most of the action is drum loops. I remember when JNH wrote complex and exciting orchestral cues for his scores. Why can't we be allowed to hear the orchestra in scores like we used to??? I am sick and tired of these tedious modern scores. Give it a rest Hollywood.

Exceptional Soundtrack - Blends Perfectly with Film 2 July 2013
By J. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The music flows so brilliantly and takes you back to the beautiful scenes of Costa Rica where most of the movie was filmed.

The booklet in the album is a small picture book of AFTER EARTH pictures. On the CD and in the CD case has some nice pictures of Jaden/Kitai.

It is a collector's item.

Favorite songs:
#2 - I'm Not Advancing You
#3 - Pack Your Bags
#4 - Leaving Nova Prime
#7 - Kitai Finds Cypher
#17 - Safety In The Hog Hole
#18- Saved By The Bird
#19 - The Tail
#23 - Run To The Volcano
#26 - Ghosting
#27 - I Want To Work With Mom
#28 - After Earth

Awesome!

I love this score by J.N.H..Got every score he has made including some not publicly released. I liked the Movie and so did the 5 members of my family I took the second time I saw it. Heard it didn't do well. Critics get paid to praise or knock down whatever they want for a living and seduce many into their frame of mind without judging for themselves. I think most of them need some " Rotten Tomatoes" thrown in their faces for being so critical. One of my sons told me about the critical reviews. I lost out on a few worthy shows when I was dumb enough to read them. Thanks to M.Night. for continuing to use J.N.H. for his film scores. Gotta say. I liked Batman Begins and the Dark Knight with his collaboration with Hans.. more than The Dark Knight Rises w/o him. Two of the greatest film composers of all time in my book. They were at the top before "The Maestro" died." Jerry" if you didn't know.

Congratulations, JNH, You Have Finally Achieved Mediocrity 22 Mar. 2014

John Williams and James Horner were once my favorite composers, but alas, they also went the same direction: too many scores that were thin and repetitive, instead of one or two "blow you away" scores a year. Now JHN joins that club. I saw the movie on a Starz free weekend, so didn't have to pay a cent for this turkey of a movie. When sound effects obscure the score, you can get a pretty good idea what the music was like with the final credits piece. I turned it off half way through.

I hope JHN gets his mojo back, but I ain't betting on it. Sad!
