Product Description

In a universe of harsh interstellar conflict, the practice of interspecies diplomacy—when possible—is important. So being a Colonial Union officer attached to an interplanetary diplomatic mission sometimes means taking a fall. Literally.

John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War was one of the most popular SF debut novels of the last decade; its sequels are The Ghost Brigades, The Last Colony, and Zoe’s Tale. Other novels include The Android’s Dream and Agent to the Stars. His collection of material from his weblog The Whatever, Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded, won the Hugo Award in 2009. He won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2006, and was elected President of the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2010.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Short Story from Terrific Author 30 July 2010
By Jason Golomb - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
"After the Coup" is a short story set in the same world as John Scalzi's "Old Man's War", and its' sequels "Ghost Brigade", "Last Colony" and "Zoe's Tale". While the focus is on one of Scalzi's minor characters from the first two books, this is really just a fun snippet of interplanetary diplomatic relations resolved by good old-fashioned alien vs. human hand-to-hand combat.

Scalzi always writes amazing character dialogue and fully half of this 20-page story is a simple discussion. In the conversation, Scalzi's able to subtly but clearly set exposition, motivation and the structure for the story itself. And he does it with his usual humor, which typically draws out a couple of laugh-out-louds.

The battle scene is creative, sharply written, and comes to a satisfactory conclusion.

I highly recommend this book. And what's to stop you? It's only a dollar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like watching an outtake 17 Oct 2010
By I Teach Typing - Published on Amazon.com

If you are a fan of Scalzi and the Old Man's War series and you hate reading on a monitor pick this up. While there is room to complain that it costs something to get it on the kindle instead of reading it for free at Tor, I personally enjoyed the 10 or 15 minute read in the park. The story feels like an outtake scene from a movie that was rescued from the cutting room floor and was added to the "director's cut." I don't want to give away any of the plot but basically it reads like it was a scene cut to make sure that a movie got a PG-13 instead of an R rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh so short, oh so fun! 15 May 2011
By Mathachew - Published on Amazon.com

It's a short story about characters I know nothing about, in a setting I know nothing about, from an author I know nothing about. After reading, and enjoying, After the Coup, I want to know more about the characters, more about the setting, and more about the author. Comical, sharp and entertaining. If Scalzi's other work was as enjoyable as this short story, I've got some great reading to look forward to!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short Sci-Fi story that is entertaining! 12 Feb 2012
By jjceo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love Science Fiction and Horror stories and they are my preferred genres to read and review. This story is really pretty good. Treaty negotiations with a race of aliens are not going well. That is when Deputy Ambassador Schmidt asks Lieutenant Harry Wilson to get involved. The Colonial Union needs to be successful in these discussions or face future problems with the race named the Korba.

Wilson is a technician who is a genetically modified Colonial Defense Force soldier but he is not really trained for battle. He is more comfortable tuning hi-tech equipment than fighting. He is pulled into the diplomatic arena to possibly help save the day if he follows instructions.

What follows is an interesting story that I enjoyed. It is extremely short and I was able to read it in less than 20 minutes. I think you will like it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Short Sci-Fi Story - Recommended 11 Feb 2012
By C. Hill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"After the Coup" is a very short, but highly entertaining story set in the same universe as Old Man's War. Those not familiar with the way things are in John Scalzi's future might not appreciate some of the terminology or fully understand the genetic modifications made to Colonial Defense Force (CDF) soldiers that are hinted at in the story, so this will be best appreciated after reading "Old Man's War".

No plot spoilers for me: The story centers on Lt Harry Wilson, a genetically modified CDF super soldier assigned as a technician on a spaceship on diplomatic mission. Unfortunately for Harry the mission is going poorly and the diplomatic core needs Harry's combat skills to get things back on track... This is written with Scalzi's normal mix of good Sci-Fi and subtle humor that fans will enjoy.

This is a very short story that took less than twenty minutes to finish, but was still very enjoyable.

Recommended!
