After The Break.

I chose this book by Penny to read as the reviews for the first were quite bad and I thought I'd have a better read with this one.

It's a disjointed read with a mix of interesting scenes and recognisable media characters blended with unbelievable scenes, daft dialogue and people so flimsily and hurriedly sketched that they could be invisible. The main character Katie is so irritating at times that nibbling the book would have given me greater pleasure than reading it.

I started reading this book expecting a funny satire in the lines of the brilliantly funny "Dead Famous". Right away I was a bit disappointed by the bad writing style, but would have been able to overlook that it if would have been an amusing story. Unfortunately, it was not even that. The dialogues are boring and sometimes just absurd, most of them don't bring the story forward at all. The characters are shockingly interchangeable, probably because they are all very one-dimensional. There is no real storyline, the book reads like a jumble of single scenes just thrown together with no discernable concept. It's a pity because the topic of has-beens in a reality show has so much potential for a funny book. This book is just annoying.

Before i purchased this book I read other reviews, good and bad, and because of what others had said I was not sure whether to buy. I like Penny Smith so went with my instincts as I wanted to see if she could write. I am glad i did. I found "Coming up Next" excellant reading, quite comical in places, and could relate to KATIE as she sounds a bit like Penny. I don't know if Penny was trying to base the book on herself. I found it hard to put down because I wanted to see how things turned out. I have now started "After the Break", and can't wait to get through it.
I would recommend this book, I enjoyed it greatly.

I downloaded this having read and enjoyed Penny's first offering. I was not disappointed with this. It brought back familiar characters and was a pleasant and easy read.

I enjoy her terrible puns and wordplay as it is something that I also engage in.

I shall now read and hopefully enjoy her latest book.

This is a really dreary book. I will read it to the end as that is what I do, but the story line is feeble and the characters are rediculous with no substance. I should have taken note of the existing reviews

I bought this book because I thought it might be an interesting insight into the media world and found it to be facile and totally lacking in any real interest.

Very witty with lots of laugh out loud moments. Well written and gives us an insight to behind the scenes of TV presenting!
