Most Helpful Customer Reviews

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful By A Customer on 13 Jun. 2005
Format: Hardcover
The writing wraps you up in a warm blanket and gives you a nice cup of teaa, then whacks you over the head when you are least expecting it. This was evocative of the time it portrays particularly the values and mores. It made me laugh and cry.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Miss R S Bowles on 22 Sept. 2005
Format: Hardcover
Martin Corrick is a genius wordsmith.
In this, his second book, he explores post-war Britain and Germany, both physically and emotionally from the perspective of the two main characters Lizzie and Charlie.
I laughed and I cried but most of all I came away with a real sense of the time and places about which he writes. The characters are beautifully written and difficult topics are not shied away from.
Beautiful prose.
I highly recommend it - read 'Navigation Log' by the same author first if you get the chance.
