I think the series are underdeveloped, it looks like in the minds of its creators the whole thing is more vast than what the viewers get. It is especially apparent when you watch the commentary on the characters. They were talking of details that I have not really noticed in the film, it would be so much better if I could actually experience those inner depths of the character cast - the series don't really show it. I get an impression that the series is too short to deliver the full message, if they really wanted to show me the things that were said in the commentary, I think that Afro Samurai should have been at least three times longer, 15 episodes or something.
Despite how the creators see their product, I see it as too shallow. There was little dialogue, the plot is dead simple and starts nowhere. There are some headbands in the world and people strive to get the Number 1 Headband, for it supposedly grants them god-like powers, so you have to fight all the pretenders to your headband who currently have the lower headband number and you should also seek the guys above you to kill them and take their headband. Afro's father dies that way, when Number 2 challenges him to a dual over Afro father's Number 1 Headband. Sounds kinda ridiculous if you ask me, that ain't a plot which captivates me, I would rather see a film about people from flesh and bone that have real goals, inner desires, dilemmas, etc. The fight scenes were too short and shown too little for my liking. I know that sword duels tend to be quick, but if you have all those weird things like hi-tech weapons and strange characters you can also make the fights last longer and show more.
The drawing style is... interesting, but there's something I don't like. Of course I can't tell you what, it just didn't sit well with me.
I just watched the Resurrection movie a few minutes ago (I wrote the above a couple weeks ago), but the rating stays the same, I didn't like it and actually everything I wrote about the series still applies to the movie.
