Product Description

What is the greatest economic opportunity in the world today? China? India? South America? Wrong. It is Africa.

In the last decade, eleven of Africa's countries have racked up annual growth rates of 7% or more. Many are now growing at 10% or more annually - and achieving lift-off. According to some estimates, if Africa can grow at its current rates, by 2016 its GDP will be $3.3 trillion - more than Brazil.

It is the last great frontier market - and the one that no one can afford to ignore.

In this brilliant, thought-provoking essay Peter Guest examines the massive opportunities in the new African economy - for companies, entrepreneurs and investors.

Peter Guest is an award-winning journalist and editor writing about Africa and international development. He has contributed articles on the continent's emerging economies to a number of national and international media outlets, including the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, Wired Magazine, CNBC, the Guardian and Forbes Africa. He was the founding editor of the Financial Times Ltd's highly acclaimed This Is Africa magazine, which he managed until 2011.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Positive... 14 Aug 2012
By Nelson
A refreshingly positive book on Africa and economics. Peter Guest seems to have a hands on experience of Africa, covering the continent as a journalist, but has the detachment of an economist too. Book is short-ish and in its mix of fact/statistics and comment Africa's Century reads like a long lead Economist article. Guest argues that the future is already now, with the investment and enterprise in Africa already seeded, but book also is part manifesto for other investors to look at Africa. I'm not sure how much the coming century will be "Africa's century", but continent will definitely play a greater part in shaping things (and hopefully improving its and the world's lot). An informed and well-written long essay.

4.0 out of 5 stars A New Frontier 25 Aug 2012

I've read some of the author's journalism before and it's nice to see him wrestle with a longer format (this essay could even be expanded out to a full length book). Book is of use to general reader, to give them a more positive and up to date picture of Africa, as well as investor. History will prove Guest right, or wrong, but at least this book is a step in right direction in getting people thinking about what's on the horizon for Africa.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time for change. 24 Aug 2012
After hearing about the continuing poverty and terrible crimes in Africa on the news, I was rather surprised but enthused to read about the massive opportunities that this continent can actually offer to so many people. Instead of being a long summary of boring facts and figures that would just go over my head, Peter Guest writes in a professional and positive way that made me actually want to learn more about Africa's growing economy. I may not be an entrepreneur but this essay encouraged me to consider the future of Africa and I feel that it can really make companies and investors think twice about where they sow their seeds and I hope that one day soon we will be hearing about the successes of Africa on the news, with civil unrest being a thing of the past.
