Product Description

Product Description

Encompassing the enormous range of traditional, hand-crafted textiles from every region of Africa, this illustrated volume explores the materials, dyes, decorations and techniques of the people who create them. Five sections cover the major geographical areas and examine the materials, dyes, decorations and techniques that characterize them. John Gillow has conducted first-hand research across the continent, recording everything from the simplest items designed for everyday use to sumptuous garments required for major life events, such as births and funerals, marriages and coming-of-age ceremonies.

For anyone interested in African Textiles, buy this book, the sumptuous images and brief descriptions make it one of my very favourite books. Absolutley gorgeous.

I am very disappointed with this book. I believed it to be a true overview of textiles in the whole of Africa but it describes a selection of textiles from a limited number of peoples only, and in a rather superficial manner: hardly any technical notes, little and superficial history (sure African people did not start to dress only when Islam came along?!), no dates with the historical pictures, no indication of locations beyond mention of countries, etc.
Buy the book only if you like beautiful pictures on a wide range of designs & techniques, and don't care too much about the facts on the textiles displayed.

Terrific bookcover to start with, looks great on any shelf.
The book gives a broad overview with great pictures of the textiles from different ages in Africa.
