Africa to the north and west of a line drawn from western Ethiopia to northern Angola is generally lower than the area to the south and east of that line; the former consists mainly of sedimentary basins and upland plains, 150-600 m (500-2000 ft.) above sea level and includes the catchment areas of several large rivers, the lower Nile, Senegal, Niger, Shari, and Zaire. Read the first page
