Product Description

Synopsis

This anthology is a radical collection of love stories from African women. The collection combines the quiet confidence of established and award winning writers with the tentativeness and originality of budding writers from Africa and the African Diaspora. The collection is a radical departure from conventional anthologies and the love theme is aimed at debunking the myth that African Women are poor and helpless victims whilst showing their strength, complexity and diversity. The stories deal with a range of challenging themes including taboo subjects such as homosexuality, domestic violence, female circumcision, ageism amongst others to produce a melting pot of narratives from interesting and informed perspectives. Contributors include Sindiwe Magona and Antjie Krog from South Africa, Veronique Tadjo from Cote d'Ivoire, Leila Aboulela from the Sudan, Tess Onwueme, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Sarah Manyika, Sefi Atta and Helen Oyeyemi from Nigeria, Amma Darko and Yaba Badoe from Ghana, Wangui wa Goro from Kenya, and Doreen Baingana from Uganda et al.

This surely takes your breath away, i can say its not your typical collection of love stories. This collection blows your breath away, a collection of stories that deal with rival, death, same sex relationships and just purely falling in love. You are in for a ride. Take your time to read these stories and indulge yourself in one of the most percious things the world. Love. It is absloutely entertaining as well. Enjoy....

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Travel Companion, 6 Feb 2010
By K. Tempa - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: African Love Stories: An Anthology (Paperback)
I really loved these stories, particularly in discovering the many definitions and portrayals of love that inspired them. Most of the characters were very believable, and it is my opinion that the collection paints a fuller, more human picture of the continent from which its writers hail. While some of these pieces are sad, the element of despair that usually pervades the "disaster porn" of most African literature is thankfully missing, allowing another type of voice to come out of the continent.

There were also enough stories that I didn't feel cheated out of an enjoyable reading experience, as is sometimes the case with these short story collections, and there were also several very strong ones. I highly recommend Modi's Bride, which stood out to me as one of the more memorable tales.

A delightful anthology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Ama Ata Aidoo's work, 23 Dec 2007
By Ama - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: African Love Stories: An Anthology (Paperback)
This is a very good book. I really liked the diversity of the characters, their situations, and the varied definitions of love. I think that this anthology is a good way for people to gain a better understanding of Africa and its peoples. My only qualm is that there are no male authors. I think the male perspective should have been included.
