5.0 out of 5 stars Never fails to please 21 April 2010
Format:Audio CD
I have had this album for years and I keep playing it. This album is a slightly more modern reading of some of the South African jazz standards which were played in the 1950s and 60s. This first album by the Pioneers was led by Ntemi Piliso who was a veteran of South African township swing. Many of the tunes are by Isaac 'Zacks' Nkosi. It was recorded in Johannesburg in 1989 and the personnel is:

Fellow Madumo, Stompie Manana, Sam Tshabangu (tp) Jasper Cook (tb) Ntemi Piliso, Shep Ntsamai (as) Timothy Ndaba (ts) Madoda Gxabeka (keyboard) Nkaka Kumaio, Kay Manana (g) Bheki Buthelezei (b) Sipho Mtshali (d)

5.0 out of 5 stars Every record collection should have this one 8 Dec 2001
Format:Audio CD
Words cannot describe the sheer brilliance of this album. If you think that a bunch of old men can't get you up and dancing, this album will change that concept. Exceptional musicianship, dancing tunes and catching beats conspire to pull you with them until the last note. Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gentle African Jazz to warm the heart 12 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
Gentle African jazz, without being bland. If you like Africa, you will like this. If you like smooth , easy , natural, unpretentious jazz and even African world music, you will almost certainly enjoy this too. Dollar Brand ( Abdullah Ibrahim ) fans, don't even hesitate; Hugh Masekela fans too, dive right in,the water's fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars African Jazz Pioneers - stalwarts! 21 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Like Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club, these guys I remember playing Joburg back in '84 or '85, when I first saw them. A bunch of veteran musicians who stuck together to do their thing, playing Jamesons and other "whites only" benues like the Sunnyside.

This is simple, lovely stuff...the sort of music you could kwela jive to or play to your maiden aunt.
