5.0 out of 5 stars A taste of Africa 28 July 2014
By Grady Harp - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Gina McKay has an entirely new set of books of recipes from around the world, the common denominator being these recipes, though at times novel to the reader, are very ease to create. Three steps and you are into new cuisine. Each meal is accompanied by excellent photographs in addition to nutritional facts with the number of servings per recipe, the number of calories, amount of total fat, protein, cholesterol and carbohydrates that are contained in the meal servings.

The book includes recipes for African Appetizer Recipes (Avocado With Groundnut Dressing, Cheesy Pita Crisps, African Piri - Piri Kabobs, Marinated North African Olives, Sesame Seed Chicken, and others); African Main Dish Recipes (Carthagenian Flank Steak, Spicy King Prawns, African Spiced Lamb Chops, Peri Peri African Chicken, African Cheesy Fish and others); African Salad Recipes (Chickpea and Artichoke Salad with Feta, Cranberry Couscous Salad, South Africa Tomato Salad, Couscous Corn and Black Bean Salad, African Fruit Salad and others); African Snack Recipes (Moroccan Peas & Eggs, African Daddy Popcorn, Slow Cooked Sticky Pork Spareribs, Spiced Lamb Skewers, African Pasta Salad With Chicken and others).

Healthy, easy, nutritious and delicious. Grady Harp, July 14

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Representation of African Gourmet Cooking 26 July 2014
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
McKay's book on African Cooking has some excellent choices. i.e.
The author explains how to prepare Avocado w/Groundnut Dressing,
Piri Kabobs, African Pumpkin Fritters and South African Tomato Salad.

The Avocado w/Groundnut Dressing consists of ingredients; such as,
avocado, lemon juice, paprika and cinnamon. These are friendly
components for dieters and people controlling inflammation like
C-Reactive Protein and excess glucose.

A strength of the book is that the preparations are well described
with good color pictures and a thorough delineation of the nutritional
content for people with medical and allergy issues. Overall, the book
is an excellent value especially at the price of a free download available
to the Amazon readership generally right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes me a great cook! 27 July 2014
By Jeffrey Littorno - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Okay, I admit that I am no great cook. The thing is I would like to do better.
Sure glad that I ran across this book African Cooking in 3 Steps. It breaks everything
down into simple steps that even I can handle. Plus, it has a nutritional table for
every recipe, so that I can make sure what I’m making is healthy. If you want to
make some great dishes from Spicy King Prawns to Chickpea and Artichoke Salad with Feta
without having to spend days in the kitchen, this book is for you.
4.0 out of 5 stars Better than some of the books in this series, but ... 11 Aug. 2015
By Mike Tarrani - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read many of the books in this series and this is one of the better ones, but still lacking in some areas. On the other hand, it does introduce hobbyist chefs to some 'exotic' recipes.

What I do not like is the lack of information about the region where each dish is popular. Africa has a diverse range of cuisine. For example East African dishes are very different from North African, and that is just two examples because within North (or East, West or South) Africa the cuisine is vastly different and in many cases reflect the influence of foreign cultures. Another issue is for some clearly North African dishes there is no mention of a Tagine, which is essential. On the other hand, since this is a book that introduces some African fare to audiences who just want to add some interesting dishes to their table the novice reader is better served by not having to purchase expensive cookware to make meals that may not pass for authentic, but will probably please American palates.

One of the ways that this book stands out from others by the author is there is less opening cans and more cooking from scratch. And when ingredients like peri-peri are not available the recipes give an alternative way to concoct them.

Another thing I like is the nutritional values for each recipe. I wish more recipes and cookbooks included that information.

If you are serious about African cuisine this is really not the book for you. For one thing, it does not discuss the regions and cultures associated with each dish, so this is too generic. However, if you want to learn how to whip up some easy and exotic meals that are quasi-authentic, this is a worthwhile investment. I tested a few recipes and they came out as described and were tasty.
