5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures and great info..., 18 Feb 2003

This review is from: African Cichlids of Lake Tanganyika: Imitating the Lake Habitat, Raising the Babies, Avoiding Diseases (For the Freshwater Aquarium) (Hardcover)
I was a little surprised when this book arrived, after reading the review, as it was far better than I expected. As it is so hard to get hold of really qreat books on African cichlids, I just ordered all of the books that were available .... Out of the six, this is, (in my opinion) the best. The pictures are outstanding and it has a lot of info that I haven't found before in other books - a lot of background info on the lake and the history of the original cichlid collectors. Personally, I think I would give another book to an eight-year-old and as somebody who is already quite knowledgeable about L.T. cichlids, I found this book very informative and helpful. I can't stress enough how amazing the photos are...

If you can find a large, expensive book on this subject, then you are luckier than me, but I don't think that any book similar to this one, could give you all the info that you need to successfully keep these cichlids long term. However, this book, coupled with another book or 2 of a similar price, (i.e. quality) should give you everything that you need...it just depends on how much info you want/need and I like to have as much as possible. If you just have an interest in the subject, I think that this book is ideal, but if you want to set up a tank now, then I would suggest you buy a further book that concentrates on the fish themselves and then you should be set.

I based my rating on a book of this level, i.e. this price, you obviously can't compare this book with a £70 lexicon. You generally get what you pay for, although, i think that you get a lot for your money with this particular book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nicely put together, but skips around with a lot of basics., 17 Dec 1998
By A Customer
As a friend of mine (that owns a pet shop) said, "I really wish this book had been around when my 8 year old did a report on fish. . .". The book is beautiful. If you need some great pix or if you need some pretty easy text to copy, go for this book. If you have an in depth interest in cichlid keeping or breeding, get the book by Loiselle.

4.0 out of 5 stars A greate book for beginners, 13 Sep 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: African Cichlids of Lake Tanganyika (Hardcover)
This book has a lot of general information about Tanganyikan cichlids and the way to keep them in a home aquarium. The pictures in the book have a special glossy cover, which makes them look very good. It's an excellent 'first book', but someone interested in information about specific cichlid should search for them in another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK, 9 May 2003
By Jeffrey Szostek - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: African Cichlids of Lake Tanganyika (Hardcover)
The book is a little thin but remember dont judge a book by its cover. The pictures are GREAT!!! I have been a cichlid breeder for about 25 years and just recently i went into africans and this was one of my first books. The only problem is that it doesnt elaborate on some things, but its a great book.
