5.0 out of 5 stars Continental Funk from the Motherland 9 May 2001
Format:Audio CD
Amazing collection from Harmless! Rock solid Afro-Funk, emphasis on FUNK! Fela is here, so is Tony Allen and a host of other names sure to make you move your booty into the late late night. So pump it up, flip on a humidifier to get the neccesary layer of sweat and rock on. Go until dawn, that's what the music will make you do.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot more than just a Kuti track 28 Feb 2008
By David Johnson VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Badly needs to come into print this. This cracking little compilation is replete with heavy bass and zipping trumpets. Killer tracks galore from the cool Ajo by Peter King, the James Brown-esque Talkin, Talkin from Matata and the pulse racing guitar solo on the transcendal Vechhio. Manu Dibango weighs in with a couple of foot tapping rhythms. Well compiled, every track a winner, get your hands on it if you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest Afro Beat for your sampling pleasure 29 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The recipe: take African musicians, feed them on a steady diet of James Brown and funk influenced tunes, shake, stand back and watch what unfolds. The result: a compilation selecting the finest Afro Beat for your sampling pleasure. Who's at the party? Peter King, Wali & the African Carnival, Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango Mulatu Astatqe and more. What does it sound like? Listen to track 3, the flute grabs you, the drums make you feel as though you are 007 being chased through the African jungle, and the chants possess that camp fire sing along flavor. My favorite tune of the disc, track 7. If the name alone doesn't get you (the tune is called EXPENSIVE), the groove will. Imagine, if you will, James Brown in Nairobi backed up with a jazzy riff, and there you have it, an instrumental classic. But just when you take breather, the horns charge in!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great African funk compilation 14 May 2007
By Paul Alexander - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a great collection - Manu Dibango's greasy, funky "Weya" makes it worth the price of admission alone - but for my money, Africafunk: Return To The Original Sound Of 1970s Funky Africa is even better. I'd start there and then track down a copy of this record once you've worn out Vol. II.

Also check out the sublime Ghana Soundz: Afrobeat, Funk and Fusion in 70's, Vol. 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's all about the groove 2 May 2002

Format:Audio CD
This is one of the tightest collections of african funk I have ever heard. Buy it now (if you can find it).
