Product Description

Product Description

Reminiscent of the best novels of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, AFRAID is the first novel from Headline's newest thriller author.

Welcome to Safe Haven. Population 907.

Nestled in the woods of Wisconsin, Safe Haven is miles from everything. With one road in and out, this is a town so peaceful it has never needed a full-time police force. Until now...

A helicopter has crashed on the outskirts of town and something terrible has been unleashed. A classified secret weapon programmed to kill anything that stands in its way. Now it’s headed for the nearest lights to do what it does best. Isolate. Terrorize. Annihilate.

Soon all phone lines are dead and the road is blocked. Safe Haven’s only chance for survival rests on the shoulders of an aging county sheriff. And as the body count rises, the sheriff realizes something even more terrifying - maybe death hasn’t come to his little town by accident...

Welcome to Safe Haven. Population 907... 906... 905...

I bought this book on whim, simply sold on the blurb and front cover, and i have to say i was totally absorbed from page 1. I agree to a certain extent with previous negative reviews that it is a little ridiculous in places and you certainly need to suspend belief in others, but to be honest, i have a real life and read books for a bit of superficial escapism and 'suspend belief' moments. I'll not bang on about the plot because it's aready been covered in previous reviews, but if you like a good scare, detailed descriptions of gore and the odd twist and turn, i fully recommend this book

Waiting for more 10 Aug 2009

Many books carry reveiews saying how the depth of writing involves the reader with the characters. I have read no book where this is more so than here. This does mean, however, a lot of heartache for the reader as characters for whom one feels an affinity fail to survive! This book left me hoping that this author can write more of this standard. Incidentally this is the first time I have seen a publisher blog that says the author does not wish to share his private life!

A disappointing read.

The strapline - `are you afraid of the dark? You will be...' - is terrific and the general story summary was good. All this led me to overlook the previous poor reviews. This was a mistake as `Afraid' was hard work and I had to leave it unfinished.

I won't go in to the story, which has been covered loosely by other reviewers, but will say that `the killers' are typical horror-flick clichés (ie, they are indestructible - stabbing, burning, shooting, running over with a truck, do not effect or stop them) and the victimised townsfolk are an unlikeable lot, which means that investment in their wellbeing (as a reader) is limited. Also the story bats about between characters and events, trying to run streamlining individual stories, but this simply confuses and just when you're about to invest seriously in one character, the story flops and starts over with the traumatic events about to be inflicted on another character. Tedious.

I didn't enjoy this book, feeling slightly that it was mis-sold - I expected one thing and got something else - and wouldn't recommend.
