4.0 out of 5 stars not up to the previous 'to die' books 5 Aug 2012
By LornaA TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Previously Lisa Jackson wrote 3 books in the to die series that featured Detectives Reagan Pescoli and Selena Alvarez, the first 2 books being a 2 parter and the third related to the others kind os making a trilogy. So this book is the forth and in this one we explore the charcter of Selena Alvarez, as readers of the previous novels will know she has a mysterious past and is quite uptight and disciplined and unable to romantically attatch. And all the while there is another serial killer on the loose at christmas time in Grizzly Falls, Montana. Therein lies a bit of the problem with this story....even the characters keep half joking about the fact there's another killer targeting the small town. I really enjoyed the previous books, this one though not so much, Selenas past...not that shocking if you've read the other books you have probably halfway guessed yourself, the killer not that scary, the love interest vears way off from where the other books were going and Selena behaves very out of character and it seemed a bit stilted and forced with the plot point around her (trying to give no spoilers here!). I found it a sluggish read, normally I read a book in a couple of days this took longer as I kept picking it up and putting it down. I think the problem is the last few books and other standalone novels from Lisa Jackson have been crime thrillers with a bit of romance whearas this has taken a step backwards to romantic thriller, it felt a bit Mills and Boon-y at times. Its not bad just not up to the standard of the first 3, definately one for the fans. Previous books are:
Chosen to Die , Left to Die , Born to Die

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best but still good 10 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After reading Born To Die I just had to get the next in the series. Sadly, Afraid To Die is just not as exciting or gripping and it took me a couple of days, dipping in and out, to finish it rather than reading until it was finished as I did with Born To Die. But enough of the comparisons. This is a good well plotted novel with the usual mix of hunt for a serial killer and the detectives' private lives. For us serial readers we finally get the secrets from Selena's private life which were hinted at in the first 3 books but if you are a new reader it's not an issue as the book works well as a stand alone. I think the plotting is slightly weaker in this book and the victims weren't particularly well defined so it was hard to empathise with them but Pescoli and Alvarez are, as always, great well drawn characters. I recommend this book as an easy way to pass a few hours.

This book is okay but it's all getting a bit repetitive. Same love angle and similar killer. Will read the next instalment before deciding if I read anymore.

Very good reading. Good story line. Many twists and plots by the ice killer. Another story line from beginning of new book would be good.
