Book Description

One woman's harrowing story about life under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan

Product Description

Shirin-Gol was just a young girl when her village was levelled by the Russians' bombs in 1979. After the men in her family joined the resistance, she fled with the women and children to the capital, Kabul, and so began a life of day-to-day struggle in her war-torn country. A life that includes a period living in the harsh conditions of a Pakistani refugee camp, being forced into a marriage to pay off her brother's gambling debts, selling her body and begging for the money to feed her growing family, an attempted suicide, and an unsuccessful endeavour to leave Afghanistan for Iran after the Taliban seized control of her country. Told truthfully and with unflinching detail to writer and documentary-maker Siba Shakib, and incorporating some of the shocking experiences of Shirin-Gol's friends and family members, this is the story of the fate of many of the women in Afghanistan. But it is also a story of great courage, the moving story of a proud woman, a woman who did not want to be banished to a life behind the walls of her house, or told how to dress, who wanted an education for her children so that they could have a chance of a future, to live their lives without fear and poverty. . Amazing - must read 12 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
One woman's incredible history -- it's a disturbing, true story but reads almost like a novel... the kind you can't put down. At the same time, it is fairly impartial and is written in a very special sort of objective journalistic form. It also imparts a great deal of knowledge about the recent history of Afghanistan. One of the most moving and memorable books I have ever read. Read it and learn. Read it and weep.

This book kept me gripped to the end, I read it in two nights. Brilliant story but leaves you desperate to know where Shirin-Gol is today.
Exceptional insight into homeless refugees in their unending flight to find peace. Much suffering only shows Shirin-Gol as a rock to her husband and children and inspiration to anyone who feels the mountain of life is too hard to climb. I shall keep this one on my bookshelf.

Truely Amazing Book 29 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I have just finished reading this book and was never very interested in Afghanistan before this. But after reading this book I think those of us who don't live in war torn countries have a lot to be thankful for.
It was a wonderful book, yes, it was written in a funny way, but what this woman went through and to still be grateful for so much is truely amazing.

Good book
I enjoyed this book a lot. I read it in 2 days. It's sad to see what happens to the women in Afghanistan and the kind of things they need to endure. Moving. I give it a 4/5

Not a good book on Afghanistan
One would have to either question Ms. Shakib's intentions while writing this book or question her sources. As an Afghanistani I found finding a lot of what she wrote suspect. Read more
