Amazon.co.uk Review

Get out your handkerchiefs for this four-star weepie, a 1957 remake of the 1939 Love Affair, directed by Leo McCarey, who also made the original. Grant and Kerr are strangers on an ocean liner, involved with other people, but who can't resist each other for a shipboard romance. They decide to test whether this is the real thing by agreeing to split up, then meet in six months atop the Empire State Building. Is there anyone who can resist that setup or the tragic romantic mishap that nearly splits them up? Can you keep dry eyes during the famous finale? Some prefer the original (with Charles Boyer); practically no one liked the underrated 1994 remake with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. While occasionally a shade slow, this one soars on Grant's charm and Kerr's noble suffering. --Marshall Fine

The film on which 'Sleepless in Seattle' was based, 'An Affair to Remember' is not just a chick flick, but a film for anyone who has ever loved anyone. Cary Grant smoulders as always and we wonder what takes Deborah Kerr so long to succumb to his charms. Their romance is not the only love in the film though - family is of vital importance to both main characters. But it is their love which really captures the viewer's imagination - witty one-liners, mild innuendo, and a naturalness between the main actors prevent the film falling into slushiness, but the passion is no less profound. Tiny little gestures such as placing a kiss on the back of Kerr's gloved hand and her putting that glove to her face make the emotions come home to everyone who watches, and while the musical numbers with the children can be a little tedious, the rest of the film is so powerful that you can't help but watch it over and over. And if anyone ever asks you 'what makes life so difficult?' just answer 'People!'

an affair to remember 29 July 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
this is definitely one for the "girls". I bought this copy for my wife and as with previous vhs copies(not watched for a while) she thoroughly enjoyed being "weepy eyed" watching it. It is now doing the rounds of her"female gang" - all in their late 60's who remember seeing the original screenings whilst in their "romantic teens".
It is possible it returned "stars to their eyes"
Go on buy it for your girl friend!

Uneven classic 5 April 2008
By Greshon
Format:DVD
Cary Grant's charm and charisma could make almost anything watchable, but this is a very good film with good, snappy dialogue. Still, the second 'weepie' half is not as good as the wise-cracking ocean liner-set first half, and there's far too much singing by those sickly children, which has me contantly reaching for the remote to turn the volume down.

Also, that bit where they leave the old (but how much older than Grant!?) grandmother in Europe, and you just know that this is going to be the last time they see her, is much more sad than the tragic accident and failed meeting atop the Empire State that it precipitates. When Kerr starts humming to the old lady's piano I started to cringe, but the scene turns into something quite touching, probably due to the superb, subtle perfomances from all three actors in it.
