After a friend recommended this band to me I just decided to go ahead and buy this album, not knowing what to expect. I was amazed by how much I loved the album. Really my thing. Every song is really catchy and unique in it's own right.

My only problem is that two of the songs are labelled the wrong way round when they're downloaded. "Throw Them Overboard" is named "Wanderlust" and "Wanderlust" is named "Throw Them Overboard" so you have to make sure you amend this once your download is complete. It took me a while to realise that.

If you like gothic, industrial and world music then this is definitely for you. Steampunk at it's finest, encorporating an exotic sound. I also recommend Lost Horizon which I also bought.

I'd previously purchased and enjoyed 'Lost Horizon', so I thought I would give this a shot.

I'm glad I did. I liked Lost Horizon, but not all the tracks 'did it' for me. I REALLY like this album. It continues the very Steampunk theme of dirigibles, sky-pirates, etc. Musically it's a real blend of old and modern - "Until the day I die" wouldn't sound out of place in a 1920's speakeasy.

"Building steam" is a real foot-stomper.
"My Life" has a slightly near-Eastern vibe.
"Wanderlust" has an old-time jazzy sound, and "Throw them Overboard" is a great singalong (Amazon have mixed up the titles of these two tracks.)
"The Derelict" is based on the famous "Yo-Ho-Ho and a Bottle of Rum" from RL Stevenson's 'Treasure Island.'
"Victoria" slows things down with a slow waltz love song, then we're back into full sea-shanty mode with 'Aether Shanties'.
The final two tracks have a distinctly rocky feel.

All in all, a GREAT album. I'm still undecided as to whether any of the tracks are quite the equal of 'Skyship Pirates' from 'Lost Horizon', but some of them come close, and all in all I think this is a far better collection.

If you enjoy the whole steampunk thing (or even if you don't), listen to some of the samples provided by Amazon, or check them out on youtube. You may find you discover a new favourite group!

By far the best and most "steampunkish" 28 Aug. 2011
By Nathan T. Brierly - Published on Amazon.com
Since they "went steampunk" in 2006 they've released 3 albums. Aether Shanties is by far the best and most "steampunkish" of the three of them, and captures best their "Victorian airship adventure" theme.

Give Me A Bottle Of Rum, Billy Bones! 16 Sept. 2010
By Kristin C. Coyne - Published on Amazon.com
"AEther Shanties" is all about sea adventurers(as bucaneers like to call themselves)who search for treasure! If you like Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" you will like this album!

(T1)Under The Radar,is themeatic, but it is a fun song to jam to
(T2)Building Steam,is dancible
(T4)My Life, has somewhat of a folksy world music sound to it. I kinda wanna hop on my bicycle and take a tour of the whole town, while thinking about how we are all just a bunch of adventurers who hope to become public heroes someday.
(T6)Throw them Overboard, is another fun song!(amazon has tracks 5 and 6 mixed up. Wanderlust, should be trac 5 not 6!)
(T7) The Derelict, is based on the ditty that was chanted by the pirates on board the ship "Hispaniola" in "Treasure Island";

"Fifteen men on the dead man's chest-- Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest-- Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!"

(T10)The Clockyard,is an epic folks tale
(T11)Too Far To Turn Back,is a dramatic and themeatic piece

I couldn't get into tracks 3,5,8, and 9.

There is only one song on this CD that I wouldn't be willing to listen to over and over and over and over. It's what my husband puts on when I'm grumpy and he wants his wife happy again.
