I can't praise this book enough. It is simply one of the best retellings of Aesop's Fables on the market, and there are loads out there. Pirotta's text is witty, accesible and warm, making you root for the animal protagonists in every story. It's a delight to read out loud. The animals really do come alive with every reading and my daughter has learnt to say their lines in different voices. We especially like the poor old tortoise in The Tortoise and the Hare. She reminds me of an old aunt, complete with swollen ankles abd puffed-up feet. My daughter and I are hoping there will be an audiobook soon, which we would listen to on long journeys, perhaps on our way to Greece for our holidays. Pirotta's text really does make the Greek world come to life, especially in the real-life intros narrated by Aesop himself.

At this price this is a fantastic bargain for a gift book, whose large format gives the illustrator Richard Johnson plenty of space to display his talents. My daughter not only loves listening to the stories over and over again but pores over every picture, finding new details every time. My only regret is that there are only eight stories in the book. We could have done with more. Perhaps Messrs Pirotta and Johnson could produce a sequel? We would certainly snap up a copy. If you're going to fork out for an Aesop, choose this one. You won't regret it.

Nice book with attractive illustrations for kids but I was hoping for more than 8 fables. As a child I remembered The Wind and The Sun and also The Boy Who Cried Wolf but these don't feature here.
For info this book includes the following fables: The Cat's Bell; The Lion and the Mouse; The Wolf and the Dog; The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs; The Fox and the Stork; The Tortoise and the Hare; The Frogs that Wanted a King; and, The Jay and the Peacocks

An amzing book with something a little bit different 13 Feb 2006
By Martha Grace - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I was persuaded to buy this book from our local store by Richard Johnson's wonderful illustrations. My daughter and I had already enjoyed Mr. Pirotta's Turtle Bay before and we knew he wrote beautifully about animals. His latest work, however, far suprpasses anything he has done before. The animals in these stories come vividly to life. The sense of humour is excllent. A must for all lovers of fables and folktales.

Keeps the kids interested while teaching good character 31 Aug 2007
By Cheri Cochran - Published on Amazon.com

I've been reading a story a day to my son (9) and daughter (7). They really enjoy the stories. It is very well written and reads wonderfully. I love that while the stories are definitely within their comprehension level, the vocabulary is not "dumbed down" but stretches them. This book is a hit in our home!

A truly wonderful and original take on classic Aesop 22 Sep 2005
By Crafty Tortoise - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book by Saviour Pirotta who specialises in adapting classics for today's kids. I found the text brought a freshness and immediacey to the stories that are so often told in a pat or patronising way. The animals are treated with feeling, as if they were people - surely something Aesop intended in the first place - and the results are often hilarious and certianly always moving. They have become my son's favourite bedtime stories in a very short space of time.

This is the first book I have seen which is illustrated by Richard Johnson and they are quite simply breath-taking. He has a brilliant future ahead of him.
