Pardon my awful video skills! But since so many other reviewers have commented on the book's literary qualities, I thought it might be helpful to provide a 'virtual browse',by posting a short video show the quantity and type of illustrations. Not quite as good as picking it up and flicking through in a shop, but perhaps the next best thing!

What can you say about a series of classical fables of morality which have been so beautifully presented and illustrated?

This book is stunning; it is 30.6cm by 24.5cm with gilt highlights and title on the textured solid hardcover. The pages are a heavy grade sleek bright white paper. All this makes the book feel very solid, and this adds to the sensation when reading the book with the child (or children) of your choice.

Aesop (620-560 BC) was a Greek slave who wrote a number of moral tales, fables and stories (believed to number more than 400), but in order to avert any punishment from his masters he set them in the animal world.

Over the centuries these tales have been retold by many authors, mostly with the "moral of the story" included, and it is the moral that is missing from each of the tales in this book. Some of the 141 fables included in this book are very well known and others less so, and some were so obscurely written that I had to look up the usually snappy one-line moral message.

The book itself is transcendent, it is a true pleasure to sit down with the little ones and read. The print is sufficiently big for children to be able to follow as you read, or even read along with you.

All things taken into consideration Alice Shirley has done a magnificent job as "author" and illustrator.

By OEJ TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The immediate perception upon seeing and holding this book is pleasurable, as it feels heavy and substantial, the artwork design is attractive and of a high standard, and of course there is the knowledge that within its pages are dozens upon dozens of classic short stories that the young and old alike will love and remember.

There are 141 of these stories in fact. Some are very short indeed, barely a handful of sentences, but some cover a full page or more. With such a huge variety there should be something to please everyone, and it would make a handy bedtime-story book regardless of the time a parent has to spare be it a minute or an hour. It has lastability too, because these are stories that can be read again and again in years to come. The drawings will captivate the younger readers too and only add to the sense of magic.

With such a classic content and being presented in such an attractive and reasonably durable cover, it merits nothing less than a recommendation, although it should be said that some of the stories are short yet difficult to understand for some children. Nevertheless it will make an ideal gift for any child across a wide age range.
