This review is from: Aeon Flux - The Complete Series [1995] [DVD] (DVD)
Here is all of Æon Flux, and I mean everything this set has all the shorts and episodes that tell the story of the futuristic assassin of personal gain. There's not much wrong with this box set for fans of the show, its digitally re-mastered, with audio commentaries and of course short features that give us a more leisurely background on how the character came to be. The set also contains other sketched from liquid Television, the show which Æon Flux is a spin off of.
So what can I say, if you in to Æon Flux this is everything you could hope for, but if you've seen two or three episodes of MTV and are expecting to find out how the story began don't hold your breath as anyone who's seen the series knows that none of the episodes hold a continuing narrative, by which I mean each episode starts at the end of one of Æon Flux's many missions and the information that lead up to those events is rarely if even disclosed, and the origins of nearly ever event of character in the series if left up to viewer interpretations. This both makes it needlessly confusing but also allows you to watch over and over again and come back with a new view on the situation that you did before. Personally I prefer the 2minute shorts to the full length episodes but like Is aid before everything is here so you don't have to worry about collecting a million DVDs to get the full story, just don't be to disappointed when you reach the end and still have no clue what just happened. The meaning is what you make of it. Please note: the real box art doesn't have an opake pink eye, the regualare eye filles that space.

Compelling adult entertainment (kids can watch the new movie!),

I caught the animated series in dribs and drabs when it was broadcast on various channels, but being able to watch all of it over a reasonably short space of time improves the experience 100%. Can't recommend watching the whole thing, end to end, in one go... not unless you want to scramble some synapses and confuse yourself completely! It's both visceral and highly visual, and if you watch too many episodes in one hit then you run the risk of numbing yourself -- pace it out over a few nights, however and you can really enjoy immersing yourself in a creatively chaotic world.
If you want a cartoon for kids then this is NOT the right programme -- it's sexually explicit, violent and emotionally challenging. The live-action movie is more suitable for children, with its streamlined plot and 2D characters who fall in love and live happily ever after. The animated series takes huge risks and so (ironically) portrays people who are far more real, even though they live in a futuristic world of make-believe. The romantic love/hate relationship between Aeon and Trevor is compelling -- and always spiced by the fact that one of them might kill the other! The graphics and animation are delightful; the overall scenario is intriguing, and many of the plots are worthy of a 90-minute feature in their own right. Aeon Flux is also downright weird: it's a visual feast with plenty of intelligent comment and complicated storylines. The plot isn't laid out on a plate for you -- the viewer needs to do some work too! This is far from mindless entertainment... and there are plenty of twists waiting, so you never quite know how an episode will turn out. Teenagers will love it; grown-ups need to watch with an open mind.

I'd only heard of Aeon Flux from the recent live action film so I got this before seeing the film. I don't understand it at all and it's tremendous stuff. There's a certain honesty about it as it is created in traditional hand drawn animation format and its take on modernity/futurology is quaint yet very appealing. It seems to follow it's own bizarre rules faithfully thus maintaining an integrity throughout. Watch third CD first as it addresses the history, conceptualisation and original transmission issues as well as showing pilot and MTV shorts; it's worth it if you're new to AF. Very borderline sexuality throughout so this is really not for younger children despite its apparent cartoon imagery - parents, please be aware
