Product Description

A true story set on Greece's real 'Mamma Mia' island of Skopelos

Comic and tragic by turns, Aegean Dream is a story of love, resilience, and the power of friendship. A compelling window on the daily life of a small Greek island and the spirit of its people, this book also provides striking insights into the broken institutions that would soon shake the entire global economy.

- What’s it really like to live on a tiny Greek island?
- Why is the Greek economy so messed up?
- What IS ‘The Secret’?
...and what do mysterious skulls, Russian prostitutes, President Bush the elder, and Pierce Brosnan have to do with it all?

Dario Ciriello's 'Aegean Dream'. All story. All true.

An adventurous couple decide to leave frenetic California behind and go and live on the paradisiacal Greek island of Skopelos only to find, despite their planning and willingness to go native that Greece's state bureaucracy is quitessentially xenophobic. Not only that, it also happens to be allergic to business, entrepreneurialism, honesty, and efficiency. A true story, 'Aegean Dream' is an at times hilarious often genuinely lyrical recounting of their doomed attempts to survive and prosper in a beautiful and blissful location that also happens to be in thrall to a caustic nightmarish bureaucracy.

Greek warmth, food, landscape and culture are all described with lyrical cinematic imagination and flair, great humour, an unwavering insight and honesty, and much love. For those of a more political bent, there are a shed load of insights into why the Eurozone project might well fail and adversely affect many of us in the process. For fans of 'Mamma Mia' there are the occasional sightings and stories about the lovely Pierce Brosnan and some of the locations of the shoots. 'Aegean Dream' ends both sadly and with a lucky and timely escape, with heaven and hell as inseparable, often comic, companions.

I'm reading this book avidly. wondering exactly why Dario and Linda give up on the Greek island 'dream'. Being Brit- Italian myself and having married an Italian and living in place where people think I am permanently on holiday(Amalfi coast)_ I can see a lot of the problems coming- But it's so well written and witty it makes me laugh lots of times. And I can't wait to find out what the breaking point was................

A unique, well-written account of living on a Greek Island and battling day to day with Government beaucracy. Every Euro MP should read this book! It shows exactly why the Greek economy is in such a state of collapse and no bail out could fix it without radical systematic reform.
