Clarinda (Agnes M'Lehose) met Burms at a party and their correspondence began with an invitation to tea. They exchanged letters over the next three years, meeting infrequently. Their relationship developed into a love affair, albeit a doomed one. In place of physical intimacy the lovers had to pour out their feelings in letters with Burns expressing his frustration and bitterness at their predicament. Burns ended the correspondence and their relationship by sending Clarinda one of his most celebrated of all love poems 'Ae Fond Kiss'.
