Product Description

Product Description

The author could be described as a 'veteran' in every sense of the word, even though he was only aged 21 when the war ended. Armin Scheiderbauer served as an infantry officer with the 252nd Infantry Division, German Army, and saw four years of bitter combat on the Eastern Front, being wounded six times.

This is an outstanding personal memoir, written with great thoughtfulness and honesty. Scheiderbauer joined his unit during the winter of 1941/42, and during the following years saw fierce combat in many of the largest battles on the Eastern Front. His experiences of the 1943-45 period are particularly noteworthy, including his recollections of the massive Soviet offensives of summer 1944 and January 1945. Participating in the bitter battles in East Prussia, he was captured by the Soviets and not released until 1947.

Adventures in my Youth is a unique memoir - the author originally wrote it only for his daughter. It has never been published in any language, until now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adventures in my youth 13 July 2013
Format:Paperback
This is the military memoir of Austrian Armin Scheiderbauer who, whilst in his teens, fought on the Eastern Front, mainly during the German retreat through white Russia and Poland. He was eventually captured in a Danzig hospital and he then spent two and a half years in captivity. The book follows his call-up to his eventual release, about six and a bit years. As with most of these types of memoirs there are usually long stretches of boredom followed by moments of absolute horror. The many anecdotes are the best: the tank shell stopped by a hay bale and a belt buckle, the crossing of a river in white Russia, a wrong turn into an occupied village, the dried out corpses of Volkssturm in a cellar in east Prussia etc. I personally found his captivity most illuminating as I'd imagined it to be far worse than he describes! There are a few gripes: Armin refers to photographs but they are not reproduced, there are no maps of Poland/Russia so it's difficult to gauge what the local and wider picture is and there are German words that don't appear in the glossary. On the whole though, this is an interesting and excellent primary source.

Another German veteran it's hard not respect.
From an aesthetic background this young man developed as consciencious young officer who stuck by his training and beliefs.
