Synopsis

Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS, DESPERADO) directed this hyperkinetic kids' film based on a script by his pre-teen son, Racer. The plot concerns a daydreaming youngster named Max (Cayden Boyd) whose fantasy stories about the titular superheroes the molten-hot Lava Girl (Taylor Dooley), and a boy raised by sharks appropriately named Shark Boy (Taylor Lautner) inspire the ridicule of everyone from the local bullies to his own mom (Kristin Davis). Even Max's fourth grade teacher (George Lopez) wants him to come down to earth, but then a tornado brings Shark Boy and Lava Girl into the school to whisk Max off to the planet Drool, where only his dreaming skills can save the day. A real kid's active imagination is obviously at work here, because the giddy action flies in all directions with a cheerful disregard for conventions of logic or sanity, and Rodriguez is obviously the right sort of adult to bring such a film to life (he must be a great dad). The message about the importance of not just believing in your dreams but working to achieve them should prove relevant for an audience who may be spending a bit too much time in front of the TV or computer game. The cool 3-D effects are something else, with goo and fists and lunging Shark Boy regularly leaping off of the screen. But even without the 3-D amplification, viewers will be dazzled by the film's wild, day-glo colour scheme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great kid's film, 7 April 2006
By A Customer
My 6 year old and nearly 2 year old boys were both hooked on this film from the word go. It's simply one of those films. The colour scheme throughout the majority of the film is vibrant, which is why, in essence, I think it attracts the very young. My 6 year old could relate to Max, or the 'daydreamer', and longed to be like shark boy. Even I, as an adult can appreciate why my kid's love this film, as I myself have watched it quite a few times too!. A film for every child!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Ripp Roaring Romp for the Under 10's!!!!, 2 Mar 2006

As an adult of some quarter of a century its difficult to write a review on a film like this as it could easily degenerate into a mass slating condemning it from every aspect. That though would be the opinion of a man whose 25 watching a kids film, and wouldn't be fair as i am looking at it through adult eyes.

What i can base my opnion on though is that of my 5 year old daughter, who is notoriously hard to keep amused. In short she loved this film form start to finish. This film captivated her attention for the entire duation as she sat in silence, bespecaled in 3D Glasses. I know others who have bought this for there children and its had the same almost hypnotic effect. Watching it from the sidelines i think its superior to the Spy Kids franchise and is completely children friendly and entertaining.

The plot for those still unsure is pure kiddies comic book about a boy whose comic creations come to life and he has to team up with them to save the world. These creations are the SharkBoy and Lava Girl of the films title. Its throwaway stuff to be sure but it plays out wonderfully for kids.

As adult viewing i wouldn't even dignify it with 1 star. As an item of childrens entertainment its a 5/5 blockbuster which deserves the upmost plaudits.

This is the kinda film that if you want a few hours piece to read the paper you can pop this in and know that your kids are in safe hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fun 3D kids film - slightly in the Spy Kids 3D mould, 28 Feb 2006

I didn't take to Spy kids 3D as I have a lazy eye and so the 3D effects were literally a pain - I liked the film otherwise though. Fortunately the 3D effects in Shark boy and Lava Girl seemed far less annoying at the cinema and the fast moving film was great fun for my son (9) and I - mum and daughter didn't want to see it - they Nanny McFee'd instead. The film is essentially one long fantasy day dream sequence that merges with reality (and as its complete fiction anyway it hardly matters whether the action is 'real' or imagined). Although having a very similar feel, the storyline in this film is probably a bit stronger and more original than Spy Kids 3D - which was rather like TRON and Scooby Doo & the cyber chase (no bad thing actually). Shark boy's not unlike the 60's 'The Phantom Tollbooth' in a way or a 1980's Dr Who serial, but the special effects are naturally first rate.

I must say that, although always visually startling and stylish, it does get a bit repetitive towards the end for adults, but my son really loves it and has happily re-watched the film a few times already (and that is rare with most of his DVDs). I suppose the plot is a bit childish (hardly surprising being written by one for others), but the early part of the film is really good, particularly the first few minutes recounting the genesis of sharkboy. Besides many movies these days have a "beat up the little vampires first and take out the big bad super vampire at the end' plot, so this is a tiny bit different - although it's still the cosmic battle between good and evil. I'm not going to give away any of the plot though.

Despite the 3D glasses, overall I found the film very entertaining. Fortunately this DVD has both the 3D cinema version and the 2D normal version. In fact my son also prefers watching the 2D version on TV and he rarely goes for the 3D version unless it's with his mates and popcorn. You get a his (shark boy) and hers (lava girl) set of green/red 3D glasses included. So if you have a preteen boy about the place who missed this at the cinema, get this for him now - he'll thank you for it. So childish, but highly recommended.
