I wouldn't call this a "nearly laughless comedy," but it isn't Eddie Murphy's funniest movie. Plot-wise, it's a bit on the thin side, and if you've read the other reviews, you know pretty much all you need to know without having any surprises spoiled for you. Once again, Eddie Murphy is playing a heck of a nice guy who wants to make the universe a better place and gets into some bizarre scrapes along the way. Same old, same old, right?
Not exactly. Yeah, fine, it's set on the moon, in the future. But the look and feel of the lunar colonies is spectacular: eminently stylish mixed with futuristic, retro, and lived-in grunge. Just about every single aspect of life on the moon has been thought of, in exacting detail, and it shows. And the music is pretty darn good, too, with some fun and enjoyable remixes of old moon-themed favourites. So while you will not be needing to change your underwear from laughing so hard at this film, you'll get a few chuckles . . . and one HELL of a treat for the eyes and ears.
Well, anyway, that's my opinion. I recommend renting it to see for yourself. Then, if you like it, the price it's at now is a pretty good deal.
