Review

These simple, satisfying stories have that special something which makes children want to read them over and over again, even in our very different times (Shirley Hughes )

About the Author

Joyce Lankester Brisley (1896 - 1978) wrote and drew books from an early age; she had her first fairy story published in a children's paper at the age of thirteen. She studied at art school and, when she was twenty, had pictures hung in the Royal Academy. However, she enjoyed writing and illustrating stories best, and the Milly-Molly-Mandy series deservedly became her most well-loved and famous creation, adored by little girls everywhere, even now almost eighty years on after they were written.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return to childhood innocence 5 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The Milly-Molly-Mandy stories continue to please me even though it is 20 years since I first heard them. The secret of their ongoing charm is the simple yet insightful way in which they are written. Joyce Lankester Brisley succeeds in sharing the mind of a little girl with her audience, showing what is important to her and what makes her happy. The imaginative games she plays with her 'Little-Friend-Susan' need no explanation, it is something we should all be able to relate to - from our own childhood and our own children. This book has no magic potions, no dinosaurs, no car chases etc. and yet its observant telling of the everyday adventures of a little girl and her friends can be far more thrilling and rewarding to those listening to them than any 'space-warriors' or evil magicians.

Having read all the Milly Molly Mandy books as a child, I was eagerly awaiting a time to share these stories with my daughter, now aged 10. In contrast to all the highly fashionable fantasy, romances or dance based releases that are currently best sellers, this was a step back in time to something innocent and wholesome, that is simply delightful.

Having all 4 books in one is a great idea and all the original drawings and writing style is the same. Looking at the map of the village and being able to visually see the layout, is a great feature of the books, and we have enjoyed spotting all the locations that the stories took place.

It has been wonderfully indulgent for me and my daughter to share in a world from days gone by, where technology was minimal and old fashioned values were upheld. The stories are a good 5-10 minutes long, so make an ideal bedtime story or book for my daughter to read out loud to me with comfort and ease!

I would recommend this to everyone!
