Modern Romance cleverly combined 80s new wave pop with latin dance beats. Adventures In Clubland contained the singles Everybody Salsa,Queen of The Rapping Scene,Aye Aye Moosey and their best track Bring On The Funkateers (why not a single???).

Modern Romance combined pop music and Latin American salsa music in order to create the album 'Adventures in Clubland', an album that - although a non-entry in the UK - spawned three hit singles. Everybody Salsa / Vinyl single [Vinyl-Single 7''] (1981) UK #12. AY AY AY AY MOOSEY 7" (45) (1982) UK #10. Queen Of The Rapping Scene / Nothing Ever Goes the Way You Plan' (1982) UK #37. The album also reached #1 in Venezuala where it was certified gold. It is the only album to feature lead singer Geoff Deane, but 'thanks' Michael J. Mullins for backing vocals on the cover (Mullins would take over the mantle of lead vocalist towards the end of 1982). 'Clubland' was the first studio album for Modern Romance and is heavily Latin American-influenced: 'Everybody Salsa' and 'Ay Ay Ay Ay Moosey' are typical MR eponymous chanting tracks, perfect for a party atmosphere; the album also features the latter singles' b-sides 'Salsa Rappsody' and 'Moose on the Loose'. 'Queen of the Rapping Scene' mixes Latin American pop with what would then have been an early example of rap. The CD version is the same as the original LP vinyl version I purchased back in 1984; the CD is released by Wounded Bird Records and is of excellent quality, the jacket design identical to the original. Overall, a good first album for a successful but short-lived group.

Personnel:
Geoff Deane (Vocals)
David Jaymes (Bass)
Robbie Jaymes (Keyboards)
Paul Gendler (Guitar)
John Du Prez (Trumpets)
Andy Kyriacou (Drums)
Michael J. Mullins (Backing Vocals)
Tony Gainsborough (Drums on 'Salsa' and 'Moosey')

Bring On The Funkateers 30 April 2008

Format:Audio CD
I was hooked when I first heard Queen of the rapping scene over 25 years ago and thought Geoffery Deane was supreme on it. I bought the LP when it came out and enjoyed it thoroughly. However, since the demise of my turntable, I was bereft of the album for over 15 years in searching for the CD until Wounded Bird released this again. For that I thank them. Now if only we can get our hands on the second album on CD - Trick of the light without the need for paying exhorbitantly on ebay.

Musically, this album was a breath of funk punctuated by one or 2 salsa tracks which I personally felt was inconsistent with the vibe of the whole album but... it worked with Modern Romance. The track listing is however incorrect on Amazon as only tracks number 1 to 7 are on the CD with one missing track - "I stand alone" from the LP not available on the CD.The inner sleeve if included lyrics or new footnotes would have been better for the overall package. Would have been a 'five stars'review from me if not for the gaps listed above. But nevertheless, having this is better than not having it at all.

for those who like the music of the eighties and especially songs that were not successful in u.s.a., as this group alone had outstanding success in some countries, good in reality were three songs in a medley with a very good blend of disco music and Latino sound , I had the opportunity to watch the success of video promotion at the time that call (everybody salsa) hurt that the video can not be taken, it would be great to get the complete collection of the group as both audio and video, such After some day we can buy success in simple video in DVD format, i hope so...
