Product Description

The Adventures of Augustus Fuller, classic action adventure fiction from the pen of James Rickon, contains the three stories:

CASUS BELLI

The arrival of a misdirected cryptic letter plunges Augustus Fuller, gentleman, into the dangerous intrigues of the anarchist underworld of Edwardian London. With Scotland Yard baffled and reliant on him for information, will Fuller be able to unmask the identity of the anarchist mastermind and discover their plans? Or will his high stakes game end in nothing less than Fuller’s demise in the cruellest of manner?

THE ALDBURY DEVIL

Fear stalks the snow laden landscape of East Kent as the tormented mind of an old man haunts the residents of Aldbury Hall. Can Fuller uncover what lies behind a spate of disturbing killings on the estate? Or will the nightmare stepping out of the cold winter’s night claim his life too?

THE TERROR WEAPONS

With tensions across Europe rising in the hot summer heat of 1905, the British public is held in rapture by newspaper headlines of mysterious explosions lighting up the night skies above cities across the country. Are these nothing more than natural phenomena or does the recovery of a burnt corpse at Portsmouth point to a more insidious and calculating menace at work?

About the Author

James Rickon, louche fellow from the rooms upstairs, never had a chance to be any different than he is. Having learnt to read with Hergé's The Adventures of Tintin (and thus having a reading voice at the age of five that mimicked the rough tones of Captain Haddock) he soon graduated to Captain WE Johns' Biggles adventures and had his view of the world shaped by a time that had long since passed. Not put off by such a trivial matter as having been born a hundred years too late, James struggled on against the modern world and amassed a comprehensive collection of late Victorian to early twentieth century adventure fiction consisting of authors such as Verne, Wells, Conan Doyle, Buchan and Rider Haggard in which to immerse himself. With a sweet tooth for late nineteenth century French fin de siècle, literature that did little more than influence his drinking habits enough to dilute his ennui, and a penchant for old fashioned adventures (inevitably involving service revolvers, tweed and stout hearted chaps struggling against all manner of insidious foe) The Adventures of Augustus Fuller was published by the author in 2011 to reinvigorate the classic adventure genre, brimming with anarchists, intrigue and all manner of insidious foe. 3.0 out of 5 stars Gentleman Detective 26 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I picked this from what was supposed to be Steampunk on Amazon kindle books but to me it's a Victorian detective type novel & there really wasn't anything steampunk about it. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the book as it's a gentle read, it just wasn't what I expected. Good as a holiday read at the beach.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent read 18 Mar 2012

I do not often leave a review, unless a book is truly inspirational, well written, and as in this case three excellent stories in one book, purchased at a very reasonable price. It exceeded my expectations, and I hope that more adventures of Augustus Fuller and his associates will follow.

The book was also very well edited making it very easy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasurable read 18 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These short adventures bounce into the supernatural, and the mundane, as Victorian gentleman Augustus Fuller enjoys life. Each short story follows the rather extraordinary adventures, and shows a shadowy Victorian world that often ends with pleasant parties.

This book is well worth a read, but it may be disappointing to anyone who wants a full explanation of what is actually going on. It's a pleasant distraction, though does in places lack explanation that strikes of a bit of deus ex machina

4.0 out of 5 stars Good yarns 2 April 2014

Three very, very good short stories.

It's rare to find plots this good, in fact.

'The Aldbury Devil' is particularly good.

My only criticism (hence 4, rather than 5, stars) is that Augustus Fuller himself, the central character, is a bit dull. Actually, even after three stories, you don't get to know him all that well. This is especially odd given some of the other weird and wonderful characters presented by Rickon in these stories.

Definitely worth getting for fans of this genre, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for Adventure fans. 16 Nov 2011

I'll start off by commending Mr Rickon on creating a wonderful character here in Augustus Fuller, he comes off as one part hero and one part ordinary man; I could see myself in his shoes at all the right moments. The level of detail about the political and international goings on of the time helped as well, I was immersed in the world despite it being set over a century ago.

The three stories were full of adventure and I really enjoyed the fact that each one followed its own style, from the straight up spy thrills in Casus Belli, to the mystery of The Terror Weapon and the unexpected frights of The Aldbury Devil. I would highly recommend this to anyone up for a fun read and fans of Flashman or Bond.

(Also, a fun game is to count how many times one of the characters gets thoroughly sozzled!)

5.0 out of 5 stars well recommended 16 Nov 2011

This was an excellent read, well written, gripping and with just enough grit. I particularly appreciated the fact that the text was broken into 3 short stories - it really made me feel it was worth the money. The change in gendre (and form of the prose) with each story was a little disconcerting at first, but it certainly spiced up the read. I'm looking forward to further instalments!
