Adventure Guides are the perfect travel companion for the modern explorer. Whether you're looking to backpack around your home state or boost the number of stamps in your passport by traveling overseas, these books will heighten your travel experience.

Our team of knowledgeable authors offers comprehensive introductions that cover history, geography, climate, when to go, transportation, planning and culture. Region-by-region, the books then delve into the heart of the area, with driving tours and side trips to the best museums, historic sites and shops. But the focus is on activities, and you'll learn about the best spots for diving, snorkeling, horseback riding, hiking, biking, rock climbing and more. Extensive listings of recommended tour operators, too. Select places to stay and eat, as well as regional festivals and celebrations.

Takes you to places not covered in competing guides. Hike on mountain trails, swim in hidden cenotes, watch the sun rise on a beach near the ancient Maya port of Pole (where the authors celebrated the dawn of the new millennium). Visit Bohemian Playa del Carmen, or history-rich Cozumel, where the Spanish first set foot on the North American continent.

5.0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 17 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Second edition of a highly-recommended guidebook to this fascinating corner of Mexico, a region which the authors describe as "a big hitch-hiking thumb." Their interest and hard work has paid off in both editions. The book is loaded with hotel and transportation info, great maps and interesting art work. Eco travelers will love this guidebook. The Conords provide full details on kayaking, hiking, rappelling, and camping in the region. They also feature more out-of-the-way attractions such as natural cenotes, ancient ruins and colonial towns. Of special note -- this is the first guidebook to feature a section on colonial era hacienda hotels , including both luxurious hotels and working haciendas where readers can experience authentic Yucatecan living in fine accommodations that are also economically priced. Indigenous artists in Maya villages are also profiled. As if all this weren't enough, the second edition includes a "Top 20" feature of things to do and see in the Yucatan. By far, this is the most comprehensive guidebook to the region.

We've been travelers in Mexico for years and thought we knew it all. But the Conord's valuable book took us places we would have missed -- from a great little beachside seafood restaurant in glitzy Cancun to a small ancient Maya and colonial Spanish ruin well off the beaten track. What a pleasure it was to stay in a place we could watch shrimp fisherman, using lanterns in their boats at night -- twinkling lights bobbing up and down in the harbor.

We were never disappointed, the book is well organized and their hotel and restaurant reviews were spot on. With a sensitivity to culture, history, and ecology -- plus a very readable style -- this is the best guide to the Yucatan we've ever used.

5.0 out of 5 stars A guide for the Adventurous! 1 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I am the author of the thriller/adventure 'A Tourist in the Yucatan' and I recently reviewed 'Adventures Guide to the Yucatan.' In my opinion, this is a 'must have' book for the adventure minded traveler! Bruce and June Conord have done an excellent job in putting together the ultimate adventure guide book to the Yucatan. For many travelers, a trip to the Yucatan means mostly sitting on the beach soaking in the sun. The typical tourist only sees a small fraction of what this fascinating section of Mexico has to offer. Inland are ancient Mayan ruins hidden in the jungle and colonial cities that date back to the 1500's. Available activities are diverse from scuba diving on tropical reefs or into cenotes or caves to kayaking, camping, or just getting off the beaten track and meeting the 'REAL PEOPLE.' This book does a great job of outlining all the possibilities available in a straight forward and easy to read style. The introduction section should be very helpful to the first time traveler and there are lots of maps to help you find your way.

I bought the Adventure guide to Yucatan based on the good reviews i had read on Amazon. I was already in possession of the LP edition of Yucatan.
The book offers good information but what put me off instantly was how enormous the book is. This is sooooooo not pocket sized but i guess it's not meant to be. It is very thick and the font size is ridiculously large. My granny could read the text a mile away! As a consequence it was very inconvenient to carry around day by day whilst travelling. I like a travel guide to be informative yet small and relatively easy to carry....like the Lonely Planet guide.
On top of all that the book split in two after minimal use/abuse so that made me even more angry. I basically did not use it all that much due to these annoying features. Content wise it may be better than LP but if it is not user friendly and falls apart after a few days i fail to see the point.
So, if you are going to stay in the same hotel all the time and don't need to get hold of a mule to lug the heavy thing around then this may be the book for you...
If however you travel around a lot (backpacker style) and don't want to carry an oversized poorly bound guide book with you i would reconsider buying it.
If you can live with the size and treat it very nicely (so that it does not fall apart) then you may be very happy.
I guess the lesson for me is know how large the book is you're buying from the internet. Had i seen it in the shops i would have stopped there.
I may sound quite bitter over a book but it did become a chore carrying it around since i was on the move every other day and when it fell apart for no aparent reason i just lost all faith in the book.
