Product Description

Product Description

The first of its kind, charged with joy, and graced with angelic blend of voices, this release captures in song the spirit of hope and expectation of Advent. This unique CD is recorded by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles: a young, monastic order of Sisters located in rural Missouri, dedicated to prayer for priests. Advent at Ephesus includes an amazing variety of traditional Latin and English hymns, polyphony, Gregorian Chant, medieval harmonies and an original piece to prayerfully lead you through the sacred season in preparation for Christmas.

This is a beautiful recording of Advent songs and carols, by a convent in the US.

Over the last couple of years, I have slowly begun to "reclaim" Advent for myself; I now spend this time in waiting, and preparing my heart for the coming of our Saviour, instead of "living like it's Christmas" for a month, building up rapidly to the big Christmas Rush for a climax. Not beginning Christmas celebrations until Advent is over, on Christmas Eve, I am now loathe to start listening to Christmas carols until Christmas Eve. But what to listen to instead? Advent carols, of course!
Advent carols and songs have very much gone out of fashion over recent years, and many people are not even aware of the difference between Advent carols and Christmas carols (some of the albums on Amazon purporting to be "Advent carols" contain Christmas carols as well); but Advent carols are beautiful in their own right, containing all the longing and hope of mankind for its Saviour.
On "Advent at Ephesus" the nuns sing unaccompanied, which brings a freshness to the music, and immediately gives a very different feel from the joyous, rousing organ accompaniments of Christmas carols. These songs also have their joy, but it is a different kind of joy: a quieter, as-yet unfulfilled joy, but full of hope and expectation. Sit back, relax, and let it wash over you. Christmas is coming soon...

The heading says it all. A quite wonderful CD for all the year round and not just for Christmas time.

An excellent CD in every way. Beautiful choral music in preparation for the Feast of Christmas. But for any time of the year for those who want some peaceful music for meditation, or just to relax.

Breathtakingly beautiful 20 Nov. 2012

I just received my copy of Advent at Ephesus today, and it was just as beautiful as I'd expected. There is such a shortage of Advent music. What a joy to have such a lovely variety, from Chant to Polyphony to a piece just recently written. The entire album is a capella, which lends itself to meditative mood, but there is so much joyful anticipation of the Christmas season that it is also just enjoyable to listen to. Although I loved both the familiar and less familiar Advent melodies, my very favorite was the original work by the Benedictines of Mary, "Adjuvabit Eam". It is also nice to know that in buying this CD, you not only get fantastic music, but you support a young, growing order of traditional Catholic sisters. I'm already looking forward to their next album.

Uniquely beautiful music especially for Advent - at long last! 21 Nov. 2012

God bless these Sisters, my sisters and friends! I was a part of this religious community for a year of discernment and am overjoyed that their musical ability has found wider audience now. This Advent music is some of my favorite music of all, and for me it brings back many happy memories of life in the convent there too. But I guarantee that anyone who is looking for something new to listen to for this Advent season will be just as happy about hearing it. :)

And, when Christmas has arrived, you can just switch to their previous CD: "Christmas at Ephesus" (available on their website, it was self-published)

The Benedictines of Mary are a newer Catholic religious order of contemplative nuns, traditional in their faith and joyful in their life - and YOUNG. When I entered the convent I was one of the older sisters... at 28. :) They recently were able to move "back to the land" and are working towards building a self-sustaining rural monastery in Missouri, but they are in great need of financial assistance to clear the debt on the building they built to live in before they can proceed further. Purchase of this music/CD, and the other three CDs that they self-published before this one ("Echoes of Ephesus", "Christmas at Ephesus", and "Marian Hymns of Ephesus"), will all help to contribute to the practical needs of their growing community - and to the spiritual needs of yourself!

Excellent! 26 Nov. 2012

I'd been looking for an alternative to the secular, often obnoxious Christmas music played on the radio. These Sisters sound absolutely beautiful, and the selection of songs is great! It's a huge blessing to have beautiful music that actually helps me prepare myself mentally/spiritually for the miracle of Christmas and increases my longing for the Lord's coming. God bless the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles for giving us all such a wonderful gift!

Peaceful, Heavenly and Inspirational 30 Nov. 2012

I am so pleased and blessed by this amazing recording. I feel as if I am in the monastery myself when I listen to the singing. I had ordered three of these...one for myself, a friend and one for the Novices at the Carmelite Sisters in Germantown, NY (my daughter is one of them). Today I decided to get two more...one for another friend and one for my newly ordained priest. God bless these dear Sisters for letting us share in their worship.

Exquisite 27 Nov. 2012
By Thomas Craughwell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
By and large, I prefer mixed or men's choirs, but these Benedictine Sisters are the exception to my rule. Their voices are lovely, their harmonies perfect. And every hymn is performed a cappella, which is challenging, but which they carry off flawlessly.
