Product Description
This is the second-level continuation of "Swimming: Steps to Success". The book features 18 steps designed to help swimmers review and improve the crawl and breast strokes, learn the new competitive back and butterfly strokes, and master competitive strokes and turns. 1.0 out of 5 stars Trudgen stroke?? 1934 theory. Unhelpful for 4 basic strokes., 28 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This book can be summed up by one fact. The Trudgen stroke is dealt with in the 'Advanced' edition in the following way; 'Why is the Trudgen stroke important?' It apparently is the 'key link in the evolution of strokes' and 'is swum by many swimmers today who think they are doing the crawl.' Quotes from 1934 published authors are used widely. As a competitive swimmer since 7 years old (in the 70s) and now a dad-evening-coach (in Holland), the reviews generally of this book led me to buy it along with the 'Advanced' edition before recommending it to parents of the kids I coach. The type of book I was looking for was one in which simple structured instruction on 'How to..' as well as helpful tips and diagrams would be given to aid understanding. The book is very general in nature and is not, in my opinion, particularly useful for anyone serious about competitive swimming or the 4 basic swimming strokes of today. Diagrams are misleading, drills less than helpful. I cannot believe that a drill of single arm butterfly with flippers and a float held by the fingertips will do much to help someone learn butterfly. The theory of putting someone in flippers and snorkel to start with is also questionable due to the FALSE sense of security it gives. The demotivation apparent, to say a child, when they suffer the huge step back when you remove these false aids is common sense. The content may be of some use to the non-swimmer or hydrophobic who is motivated by graded achievement levels and boxes to tick. The US market in learning aids for instance may find this more normal than myself as a European - different folks, different strokes. The book also covers strokes such as side-stroke and life-saving strokes, simple '. These are covered reasonably well, but with the same shortcomings in diagrams as the 4 competitive strokes. For someone wanting to know how to swim any of the 4 basic strokes I can recommend the cheap, short, factual, straight-forward, simple and well diagrammed 'Swimming, Know the Game' produced in association with the Amateur Swimming Association of the UK. You will at least avoid single-author theory and its cheap enough so that kids in a club could even get one each. Having studied it back to back with the 'Steps to Success' books I know where I should have put my money for my purposes ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good diagramatic approach book, 14 Aug 1999
By A Customer
A good book if this is you are looking for a simple to understand basic book. Frankly like many other sports, you cannot just swim by looking at the pictures. I wish the book has more step-by-step pictures.
